WHPE December Update
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa! Happy New Year!
What a wonderful December this has been. For Health and Physical Education we received an early holiday present. The President has signed into law the new Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). This time around it is called "Every Student Succeeds Act". For the first time health and physical education is now counted a "core subject". The language has changed with this version, instead of "core subjects" the new terminology is "well rounded education" and health and physical education are part of that definition.
In addition the new ESEA reinstates Title IV Safe and Drug Free Schools funding. This is a block grant that each state gives to every school district. While we will see how the new rules will be rolled out by the Department of Education and the Wisconsin DPI Title IV now includes language that says that funding can be spent on health and physical education. So we are optimistic that this could allow for some funding our school districts for health and physical education.
Now the bad news. PEP grants have been dropped from the new ESEA. The only funding may come from Title IV. Carly Braxton from SHAPE America told the WHPE board this week, "Congress must pass an appropriations bill for FY16 that includes funding for PEP in order for current grantees who are in year 3 of their grants for FY16 to receive their funding. We're in communication with the key appropriations leaders on this and will keep our membership posted."
So here is to more good news before the winter break. Please have a wonderful winter break. Spend time with friends and family and come back for the new year all rested!
Sincerely,
Brett Fuller
WHPE President

WHPE and Technology
WHPE is taking a deeper look at how we communicate with our members and provide opportunities for professional development and learning. We have put together an ad hoc technology committee. One of the members of that committee is Matt Pomeroy who has agreed to be one of the WHPE members who is going to make certain our twitter account is being used more effectively. If you are on twitter please follow @WHPEOffice. If you have not joined twitter but want to, go to: https://twitter.com/
If you are interested in joining the technology committee. Please contact Brett Fuller, fullerba@milwaukee.k12.wi.us or on twitter @BrettAFuller.
