Muskego Lakes Family Newsletter
September 23, 2022
Dear Muskego Lakes Families,
You recently received your student's Forward assessment results in the mail. In the upcoming weeks, you will also have your child's Fall iReady assessment results. Math/literacy teachers are planning to review these results and goal-set with the students, and then your child will bring their results home in their Musky folders.
iReady assesses students across multiple grade levels, allowing for identification of root causes of students’ struggles and/or for identification of areas where a student is ready for further challenge. This information provides our teachers with a “road map” for instruction for the year and gives us a goal for your child’s growth for the 2022-23 school year.
On the report, you will find your child's Overall Placement in the upper right corner of the report along with their score in parenthesis. Our target for students is to be at "Mid On Grade Level" or higher by the end of the school year. For a 6th grader, the target is to be Mid 6 or higher by the end of the year. Placements are broken into "Early", "Mid" and "Late" for your child's current grade level. If your child is placed above or below their current grade level you will not see "Early", "Mid" and "Late" as part of their placement. In addition to the Overall Placement, each report gives your child's grade level placement for each subject domain.
It is important to us that all students grow throughout the course of the school year. iReady provides two goals to help teachers, students and families measure growth.
Typical growth goal: The average annual growth for students at your child’s grade and placement level. The typical growth goal line is the solid line on the bar graph.
Stretch growth goal: For below-grade level students, the stretch growth goal is an ambitious but attainable level of annual growth that puts below-grade level students on a path toward proficiency. Stretch Growth for on- or above- grade level students is an ambitious but attainable level of annual growth that puts on-grade level students on a path to achieve/maintain advanced proficiency levels. The stretch growth goal line is the dotted line on the bar graph.
As you review the results of either the Forward or iReady assessment with your child, know that this data provides us with one way to understand your child's progress. If you have questions about either report, please reach out to your child's literacy or math teacher.

After School Transportation
Students are required to ride their assigned bus home. From time to time, students want to or need to go to a friend's house after school. In this situation, a signed note from home is needed. The note should contain the following:
- Student's first and last name
- Date of travel
- Assigned bus route #
- Friend they are going home with
- Friend's bus route #
- Parent/Guardian signature
The note should be dropped off at Student Services in the morning. Student Services will issue a bus pass that can be picked up in Student Services on the way out of school. Students are only able to ride a different bus if they have a school issued bus pass. Following this procedure ensures that buses leave on time and that all students are on the correct buses. Thank you for your help.

Social Media Tip of the Week - Staying Safe
Social media is a typical daily occurrence for many of our students. With that in mind, we wanted to share some important reminders to keep them safe while interacting with these different online tools. We encourage you to review these tips with your child to build their awareness of how to stay safe online.
- Set all of your accounts to private so that only friends see your content. If not, anyone on the social media app or internet could see what you are posting.
- Are you using Snapchat? If so- turn off your Snap Map. If you have this turned on, there is no way to see who has viewed your Snapchat location, and each time you open the app, it's updated.
- Be careful about tagging locations and posting vacation pictures.
- Be careful about what you share: your address, date of birth, social security number, school mascot, pets' names, etc. are either private information or commonly used questions for password recoveries, so they are not something that you want to share publicly.
- Only accept friend requests from people that you personally know. Don't just add someone because they sent you a request. Ask yourself how do I know this person? Have I met them in real life before? Are they a positive influence on me?

Student Contract at Muskego Lakes
When registering for the school year, students and families are required to indicate that they have read and agree to the Muskego Lakes Student and Family Handbook. However, that happens outside of school before the school year begins.
So, in order to set our students up for success, this we are rolling out an MLMS Student Contract. This way, our students have their own copy of expectations from the Muskego Lakes Student and Family Handbook. We took time this past week to review the expectations with them while also allowing them to ask questions.
In addition, we will use the contract when expectations are not met to reteach and reinforce our agreements to one another within our school community.
Student Picture Retake Day
Picture retakes for students that missed picture day or that would like a retake is on September 29th. Please note that this is during spirit week (80's day), so if your child would like to participate in the spirit day, please have them bring their 80's gear for after they have their picture redone.

Free/Reduced Lunch Application
If your K-8 student(s) have been part of the free/ reduced lunch program for the 2021-22 school year, a new application needs to be completed prior to October 14, 2022 for the benefits to continue for the 2022-23 school year. If you have high school students, they start the school year with a paid status until a free/ reduced application is submitted and approved.
There was a waiver the last two school years due to COVID which allowed for the prior year’s meal status to be rolled over to the new school year. This waiver has ended so it is now necessary to return to the prior requirement that a new free/reduced lunch application be completed each school year. The free/ reduced application can be found on the Muskego Norway School District website under the Parents & Students tab:
https://www.muskegonorway.org/parents/FreeReduced.cfm
Please return the completed application to the food service office at the high school. If you have any questions, please contact Deb Matson at 262-971-1790 Ext. 4622 or
