From the Desk of Kathy Branson
Hello West Families,
One month ago today, West staff was anxiously preparing for our students to return to school. ALL of them … in person … here at school. It seemed so long since we had ALL been together (17 months to be exact). There was an excitement for school to “return to normal” but not really quite sure what our “new normal” would look like.
We have learned that students are still energetic, excitable and social. We have learned that students are eager to learn and need to be engaged. We have also learned that our students need our support and guidance to teach them and remind them of the importance of expectations when we are all together so that everyone can learn in a safe and respectful environment.
So our “new normal” in middle school looks alot like our “old normal.” We have middle school aged children that need guidance, instruction and support to insure that they feel safe and successful. Some students just may need a little more. So our “new normal” looks like just a little more.
Best Wishes,
Mrs. Branson

West Middle School T-Shirt Design Contest
Hear Ye, Hear Ye! We are holding a contest for a new design for t-shirts in our Warhawk Shop! Do you like art? Do you like to draw or design logos? Maybe this is your jam!
*For the contest, ANYONE can participate. Students and Staff.
*Individuals may submit as many entries as they wish
*Student Council will choose their top 3 (or maybe 5) favorites then have students vote once we narrow it down
*Several students were worried about not being able to find my email. It's totally OK for them to come to my classroom and airdrop it to me. Room 400.
*There can be words on the shirt but they need to be school appropriate
*The shirt does not have to have a Warhawk on it, get crazy! Get creative!
*Please specify if there is a front or a back design if you submit more than one image at a time.
*Yes, the winner will get to choose the size of their shirt.
*DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 20th! (students were notified of the contest on the 9/13).
Please contact Mrs. Miescher-Lerner if you have any questions. Room 400 or email her at:
Collaboration Project Items Needed
Mrs. Miescher-Lerner and Mr. Williams are collaborating on a project together. One of her flex classes is creating theater props for him to use in school performances. It’s great because my students get to use measurement, creativity, math, lots of research about how things are made, engineering, and STEAM in general all while helping the theater department. We are looking for a few donations:
- Four concrete bricks
- Five yards of green cloth x three (Meaning that we need three different shades of green in five yard increments)
- Two pieces of 4 x 8 plywood
- 10 sheets of Luan or plywood underlayment 4x8 preferred
- Three pieces of 5 x 9 Muslim or canvas cloth
- Brown paint
- Fake fur in white brown and gray, at least 5 yards of each
- Feathers of all kinds and colors
- Hot glue sticks, all sizes
- A tarp for painting
Please contact Jessica Miescher-Lerner to make arrangements for donations at jmiesche@usd497.org or leave a message at 785-330-4652.

QOTW - Quote of the Week
A friend is one to whom one may pour out the contents of one's heart, chaff and grain together, knowing that gentle hands will take and sift it, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness, blow the rest away.“ — George Eliot
