6 Things You Need to Know And Can Share with Others
November 21, 2019
1. PhD Science: Instructional Strategies
PhD Science has identified some high leverage teaching protocols/structures that they call instructional routine. An instructional routine is a classroom procedure that supports the development of content knowledge and academic skills in an engaging and active way. The routines suggested in PhD Science lessons help students think about science in different ways to build content knowledge, deepen understanding, and develop critical thinking skills. Instructional routines increase student engagement and provide practices to make students’ thinking and learning visible.
Below are a few instructional routines:
- The Question Corner routine allows students to express and support their claims.
A Socratic Seminar is a student-led academic conversation. This routine allows students to use their speaking and listening skills to express and deepen their science content knowledge.
Whip Around serves as a quick check for understanding of each student’s thinking or a
culminating reflection on learning.
3–2–1 Response encourages students to reflect on a text or new learning and provides formative assessment data for teachers.
A morpheme matrix deepens students’ knowledge of roots and affixes. It can be used to introduce a new term or to build on a known root.

2. Great Minds Virtual Meetings (At Your Own Pace)
During the grade specific, 30 minute video, the first 15-20 minutes are spent going through a mini presentation about lesson/module pacing. The last section was an open forum Q&A session. Participants must view the video then complete a Google Form to receive certificate.

3. Science Fair Update
All science fair paperwork must be submitted electronically through the Scienteer website. This includes the pre-approval of microbiology and vertebrate animal research projects. The Scienteer website will step you through the entry of your information much like a tax preparation software package.

4. Open Library
Open Library is an open, editable library catalog, building towards a web page for every book ever published.

Thanks Ms. Feaster from Turner for suggesting this resource!
5. World Book: Science Power
Science Power has the same great content of World Book, but it is arranged in a way that students looking for science resources could easily access them. All of Caddo may easily access Science Power by logging on to Classlink and clicking on the World Book icon.
6. Online Tools Training (OTT)
Give students the opportunity to practice the tools they will use on the grades 5-8 and high school tests. Practice tools are available for grades 3 & 4 too.
