PCMS WEEKLY UPDATE

April 15, 2016

Our 6th grade students completed their MAP testing this week. From speaking with them and their teachers, they did a great job and felt very prepared to do their best. Next week it’s our 8th graders’ turn to show their stuff! It continues to get busier the closer we get to May! Here’s a look at what’s coming up.

End of Year PCMS Library Schedule

  • Starting next week, students will only be allowed to have one book checked out.

  • Anyone with a fine may not have any materials checked out.

  • Last checkout day is Friday, April 29th

  • All Library materials are due by MAY 6th!

K-8 Summer School enrollment has been extended!

We are still accepting enrollment forms for K-8 Summer School. If you would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please fill out the enrollment form and return it to school ASAP!

U.S. Open Robotics Championship

The PCMS Robotics Team entered U.S.Open Robotics Championship last week, competing against 96 other middle schools across the US and Canada over the course of three days. The team ended their qualifying rounds 7-3 and were eliminated in the playoff bracket as the 14th seed. The tournament marks the end of the season for the group, who guided their robot to a tournament win in Belton and a showing at the state tournament in Rolla, MO. We are so proud of these students!

Team members: (L - R) Jason Martin, Kyle Rogers, Austin Davis, Duncan Bennett, and Grant Albright

PTO needs your help for Teacher Appreciation Week!

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 2-6, and PCMS PTO has a fun week planned for the teachers!! On Thursday, May 5th we will be grilling and providing lunch for all teachers and staff (75). In order to make this a success we need your help! We are asking parents to sign up and help provide items for the grilling feast. If you have any questions or would prefer just to donate money, please call Jennifer Stehlik at 816-806-8212. Thank you in advance for helping make teacher appreciation week a success. Please go to Teacher Appreciation Grill-out on May 5th and sign up to help!

Career Day Volunteers Needed!

We would like to request your participation in our annual PCMS/Barry Career Day. Each year we assemble a group of 25 parents willing to share details about their job with our schools. As a speaker, you would be sharing information about your job in a rotation with two other presenters who are in the same career path. 6th through 8th grade students will be signing up for the pathway they would like to learn more about. We would need you from 9:15am to 1:40pm on Wednesday, May 11th. Lunch will be provided.

Please consider sharing your career with us. It means so much to our students when they get the opportunity to learn about all the interesting careers out there which they may someday choose from! Please use the emails listed below to contact one of the middle school counselors if you are willing to help.

A Note from the Nurse RE: Meningococcal Disease

  • Meningococcal disease is a life –threatening illness. It is caused by bacteria that infect the blood, brain, and spinal cord. It is one of the most serious causes of meningitis.

  • The disease is spread person-to-person and spreads easily in crowded settings. Teens are at an increased risk of meningococcal meningitis due to common everyday activities such as sharing utensils and water bottles, and kissing.

  • The disease most often strikes older teens and young adults.

  • Vaccination is the best way to prevent meningitis.

***The CDC strongly recommends a booster dose at age 16, after an initial vaccination at age 11 or 12.

2016-2017 Immunization School Requirements

  • Grade 8 – One dose of MCV is required

  • Grade 12 – Two doses of MCV required unless the first dose was administered to a student who was 16 years of age or older, in which case only one dose is required.
