A Day Against Bullying

Friday, March 20th, 11:45pm

This is an online event.

Take a stand against cyber bullying by either posting a photo on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter with the hashtag #stopcyberbullying with a blue ribbon or band around your wrist on the national anti-bullying day or make a statement on bullying and share it around your school and community .

What are the risks/consequences of it?

Cyber bullying can be very damaging to adolescents and teens. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and even suicide. Also, once things are circulated on the Internet, they may never disappear, resurfacing at later times to renew the pain of cyber bullying.

Many cyber bullies think that bullying others online is funny. Cyber bullies may not realize the consequences for themselves of cyberbullying. The things teens post online now may reflect badly on them later when they apply for college or a job. Cyber bullies can lose their cell phone or online accounts for cyber bullying. Also, cyber bullies and their parents may face legal charges for cyber bullying, and if the cyber bullying was sexual in nature or involved sexting, the results can include being registered as a sex offender. Teens may think that if they use a fake name they won't get caught, but there are many ways to track some one who is cyber bullying.

Why does it effect so many teenagers?

"Cyber bullying affects many adolescents and teens on a daily basis. Cyber bullying involves using technology, like cell phones and the Internet, to bully or harass another person." - BullyingStatistics.org
The main factor for the large amount of teen bullying is that they're the ones most connected, spend most of their time on it and tend not to think properly before posting, sharing or commenting online.
Cyber bullying is now the largest form of bullying that effects teenagers and it is due to the main reason, the fact that many more kids tend to be braver, sneakier and crueler online then they are in person.

How can you help?

If you see/hear of anyone who may be being bullied online try and help them or if you yourself are getting bullied there are various ways you can stop it from happening. Encourage them to tell authorities or even parents. There are many websites and help lines that they/you can get into contact with. If you know who is doing the bullying confront them in a polite way or get the person being bullied to ask them to stop because they may not even be aware what they're doing. If it continues get in contact with the police or shut down all social media.
