OCTOBER 12 PSAT/NMSQT TESTING
All Juniors have been registered to take the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 12. Juniors should report to school by 7:30 a.m. They need to bring a photo ID, two Number 2 pencils and a calculator. Like the SAT, the PSAT/NMSQT measures the knowledge and skills in reading, writing, and math students learn in the classroom—the same knowledge and skills your student needs to succeed in college and career. Click here for more information on the NMSQT. Room assignments will be shared with students via Schoology before October 11, 2022. If you have any questions, feel free to contact our NMSQT Coordinator, Erika Williams at erika_williams@glenbard.org or your student’s counselor. If you miss this testing date, there is no make-up test.
Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors are not to report to school on October 12, 2022.
NEXT ROUND OF STATE ASSESSMENTS FOR 2022-23
- Wednesday, April 12, 2023: SAT for Juniors
- Monday, April 17, 2023: PSAT 8/9 and PSAT 10 for Freshmen and Sophomores

Students can find free individualized test preparation through Khan Academy. Additionally, Glenbard offers a free SAT prep course to juniors. Information on this program will be sent later this fall.
STRIVE ACADEMIC SUPPORT
We encourage students to take charge of their education by using Schoology and PowerSchool regularly and meeting with their teachers for help and support. Another academic support for our students is our after school homework help program. If students are in need of assistance with projects and assignments or need help studying for an upcoming test, STRIVE teachers are here to help! STRIVE is an after school program where students can get assistance from a subject area teacher. STRIVE is open to all students, Monday through Friday mornings, from 6:55 - 7:25 a.m. and Tuesday through Thursday, from 2:45 and 4:15 p.m. If you have questions, please contact our STRIVE Coordinator Beth McNett at beth_mcnett@glenbard.org.

SETTING UP A COLLEGE BOARD ACCOUNT
All students should have a College Board Account. This account allows students to enroll in their AP Class, register to take AP exams, view scores, track progress on the PSAT and SAT, and send scores to colleges and universities. Directions on setting up individual college board accounts can be found here: Setting Up Your College Board Account Link
ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) EXAMS
It is an expectation at Glenbard that any students enrolled in an AP course will also take the course AP exam in May. The cost of a student’s AP exam(s) is factored into school registration fees at the beginning of the school year. The D87 School Board has made the investment to pay for one AP exam for every Glenbard student every year. All subsequent exams are $96—except AP Seminar and AP Research, which are $144.
To officially register for each AP exam, students must join the My AP classroom for each of their AP courses. My AP is a College Board website where students register for exams, access course resources, and see their exam scores. To register students use a specific join code provided by their teacher. Students are not registered for the exam(s) until they do so. We ask all AP teachers to complete this process with their students in the first month of the school year.
If your student drops an AP class, the student’s balance will automatically be updated to reflect the change. The exam fee will be credited in full until College Board’s November 15th deadline. After this date, families will receive a partial credit (exam cost minus a $40 cancelled exam fee).
If there are extenuating circumstances, families can withdraw from the exam without financial penalty by November 15, 2022 for full year AP courses or March 15, 2023 for 2nd semester only AP courses by notifying their school counselor or the AP Coordinator Beth McNett. Partial credit (exam cost minus a $40 cancelled exam fee) may be available until April 14. Students who are absent on test day will be offered the option of late testing, but will not be eligible for a refund.
If you have questions about AP Exams, feel free to contact your students counselor or AP Coordinator, Beth McNett at beth_mcnett@glenbard.org.

SUPERINTENDENT, DR. DAVID LARSON, CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF TITLE IX
In 1971, before the landmark Title IX legislation was enacted, a look inside Glenbard East’s yearbook revealed only five girls competitive sports. Today, Glenbard East provides 15 IHSA-sanctioned sports for female students and multiple levels of these sports.
Title IX is the federal law passed in 1972 that protects people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities that receive federal financial assistance. We join others across the country in celebrating the 50th anniversary of this important legislation.
Let’s take a closer look at the impact of equitable access for all students:
● Research shows that students who are engaged in sports and activities do better in school. They also have better options after high school.
● Several of our Profile of a Graduate competencies align with the importance of extracurriculars:
- Students embrace diversity and create community through mutual respect.
- Our students collaborate. They inspire and motivate others toward a common purpose.
- Students are self-empowered. They advocate for themselves and others in a socially responsible, empathetic manner
- Students are advocating for themselves. They are developing skills and using them outside the classroom.
● Students’ participation in athletics and activities is a priority in D87. We have a Board of Education goal for engaging all students in opportunities outside the classroom that reflect the interests of students from diverse backgrounds.
- The 2026-27 goal is for 80% of the district-wide student population to be engaged in a sport or activity. In 2021-22, total participation in extracurriculars was 69% district wide. We continue working to increase student participation in clubs, activities and athletics.
- If students want to create a new school club or activity or introduce a new sport, we work hard to meet that need.
● While many people think of Title IX as a sports law, it is an educational law. Our work focuses on academics, as well as participation in athletics and activities. For example, we have a Board of Education goal related to the number of juniors who are enrolled in Physics and Algebra 2 with Trigonometry. In 2021-22, 80 percent of our juniors were enrolled in these challenging science and math courses. In addition to preparing students for careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), we are committed to students stretching themselves by taking these high level courses. We have a legacy of setting ambitious goals for student achievement.
Benefits of Athletics and Activities
According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, before Title IX, one in 27 girls played sports. Today that number is two in five. Among the numerous benefits for all students to participate in sports and other extracurricular activities are:
- Leadership skills
- Improved academics
- Improved health
- Positive body image
Success from Athletics to Careers
Title IX’s focus on equity in education and equity in athletics changed the lives of female athletes. It’s interesting to note that there is a high correlation between women who were student-athletes and business success, and a leading factor is sports increase females’ confidence.
Equity Commitment
The heart of Title IX is its efforts to create gender equitable schools. Males and females are expected to receive fair treatment in all areas of public schooling. We do a tremendous job with this in D87. The goal of equity for all students is integrated into our practices. We are committed to our students being affirmed, treated fairly, impartially and non-judgmentally. We prioritize cultivating a culture of inclusion, belonging and high achievement for every student.
It is affirming to see celebrations of the 50th anniversary of Title IX across the country. We owe a debt of gratitude to those who championed this effort more than 50 years ago.
