If we do not have volunteers, we will lose these programs. If you are a parent in K-2 and are able to volunteer, please email me at lamoury@cantonma.org by Friday, January 19th with your availability.

Luce CAPT Help
Dear Luce Families,
We are in danger of losing the ability to do quality events and programs outside of school hours due to low volunteer turnout. Please feel free to send this to friends.
A brief description of the positions/events we need help with:
- CAPT Vice President- this is a critical need to help share the load of the current team. This person would help run meetings, set priorities, and work with the e-board to lead events with other CAPT volunteers. Time commitment is probably 4-5 hours per month.
- Evening Activity Coordinator- Plan an evening event for parents typically held in March or April. Past events have included trivia and raffles. Time commitment 8 hours including the event night.
- Fun Run Coordinator- This position is one of the most important right now. Each May CAPT hosts a Canton-wide 5K. This event really needs to get started with planning and logistics NOW. Time commitment is 10-15 hours.
- Fun Run event team- there are a lot of items needed to get through for the fun run. Having a large team of volunteers will help. The time commitment is about 10 hours.
- Luce Carnival Team- we are trying to bring this event back in March but if we don't get planning and moving soon it would be hard. We do have a coordinator but we need the team behind them. Time commitment is about 5-6 hours.
- Luce Event Flyer Creator- help the event teams by creating flyers and marketing for each event. Time commitment is about 1 hour per event. We have a CANVA pro account to do this on.
- Luce CAPT social media and website creator- update and maintain our web presence. Our website is google suite and we currently have one Facebook page.

In addition to our needs above our 4th and 5th grade musical needs help. These opportunities can be held by any grade parent. In fact, it is helpful to have parents whose children are not involved in the show helping so that families can enjoy the performance. Our play is on 2/10 & 2/11. Click here for the signup genius.
Help needed includes:
- Ticket sales
- Concession sales/coordination (collecting donations, setting up etc)
- Cast-o-Gram Sales (creating the bags for each student, selling them at the event (preshow), and organizing them into bags for delivery at the cast party)
- Planning, Decorating, and Staffing the Cast party - if attending the party must be CORI'd and finger printed
- Green room supervision during the show- must get CORI'd and fingerprinted

Nurse Bonner's Notes
January brings National Hobby Month. Before January is done, see if you can focus on a hobby you can do for yourself and with your kids. Our days are busy but finding a hobby you enjoy is great for your health and your children's health. It can relieve stress, challenge your brain and provide experiences for everyone outside the ever present screen time. For me, I have re-discovered reading (for enjoyment) and yoga. I love playing board games with my children. I'm really bad at it, but I think I will try to get better at ice skating this winter! Please don't laugh if you see Nurse Bonner falling on the ice! :) See if you can challenge yourself this month to set some time for you and your children separately to either pick up that hobby you always wanted to do or one you already are doing if you can do it more often. I would love to hear all your adventures to get more ideas myself. Happy Hobby-ing.

Hour of Code Complete & More!
All K-5 classes have successfully completed their Hour of Code sessions with Mr. Evans. They have learned new coding concepts, and coding skills to solve problems and complete challenges. In addition to Kodable (K-2) and code.org (3-5), Mr. Evans has setup and taught students how to use Scratch Jr. (for grades 1-2 on iPads) and Scratch (scratch.mit.edu using student accounts) to grades 3-5. With these, students can continue to learn to code as well as have fun using coding to create animations, stories, and games.
If you have any questions about these new coding opportunities or ways you can support your children with this, please reach out to Mr. Evans (evansw@cantonma.org).
STAR Universal Screener Update (LAST WEEK)
Universal Screening Assessments
We will be using the STAR 360 universal screener this year as our universal screener. This assessment is designed to help us identify students who may need additional support and/or intervention in reading and math. Students will be assessed three times this year: Fall, Winter, and Spring. The next assessment window for grades K-5 is January 3- January 13. This will be the first universal screening with STAR Early Literacy for Kindergarten.
Students will need to bring their school-issued iPad or Chromebook to school on days that they are testing. Parents should expect an email from their teacher with more specifics on the dates for their class.
Teachers will also be using the STAR Curriculum-Based Measures to monitor progress.
More information is available on the Renaissance parent page: Parent Resources
