Principal's Ponderings
It's been a great 1st 4 weeks of the school year! Overall attendance is up from the same point last year and we appreciate your support in continuing that trend. Kids achieve more when they are at school.
Be sure to consistently monitor Family Access for up to the minute grade, attendance, discipline, and other valuable information about your student. Progress reports are visible through the Family Access portal now.
We look forward to seeing as many people as possible at "Meet the Teacher" on Monday at 6:00. You will want to print out or have available on your phone a copy of your student's schedule. We will be running a bell schedule so you will have the opportunity to visit with each teacher.
Go Spartans!

Parents,
Last week, I concentrated on the App, “Sarahah.” This week my focus will be on Social Networking in general and tips to keep your kids safe.
There are tons of apps out there that teenagers are using, as stated last week. Even the experts have trouble keeping up with all that is out there. So, what, if anything can you as parents do to help keep your child safe on the internet?
First of all, social networking, apps, the internet in general-they’re here to stay. So, trying to keep your teens off of any of these is not too realistic. Even if you take away their technology, they will find a way to get back on the net and whatever social networking site/app. The crucial step for internet safety comes with teaching your kid critical thinking skills while using these apps or sites. Talk to them about what they’re doing, ask them how they are protecting their privacy, their reputation, and how they are watching for scams and potential predators online. Role play with your teen. Give them scenarios that you can think of from an adult’s perspective and ask them to guide you through what they would do in those situations. For example, if they are using an app that allows users to be anonymous, and someone starts asking specifics, such as address, school, etc., then what would they do in that situation? You might be surprised at how trusting your child is and will willingly give this information out to others.
You as parents also need some critical thinking as well. It is in our nature to protect our children, and therefore, we might tend to panic at the first report of something horrible happening on a particular site or app. Just as with all things, the media focuses on the most awful situations because they know it will grab our attention, but we need to recognize that these reports are more often than not, very rare occurrences. Just like the old adage, “How often do you see reports on planes landing safely?” Never, unless something bad happened to the plane prior to the landing. Think of it this way. Your teen can get into trouble on any app or site, but the same can be said of many things. That is why we are there to teach and guide them.
Keep the lines of communication as open as possible with your teen and talk to them often about their privacy settings and if they have felt uncomfortable or bullied online. If the communication lines are open without judgment or fear on your part, your teen is much more likely to come to you if there is an issue online. Try not to badger them with questions. Instead you may try to ask them to be the expert and enlighten you on an app you are not familiar with. Ask them about how it’s used, how to set the account so it’s private-where only those who are given permission can see it, etc. Not sure what app to ask about? Google “the most widely used teen social media apps” and you will have more information than you ever probably wanted.
Tune in next week for a list of some of the most common questions to ask your child about general technology use, as well as questions that are specific to cyberbullying.
