Membership Campaign Success!
Mock Competition
Our first mock competition was held Monday November 7th. Role play participants had the opportunity to present in front of 14 members of the business community. We are very grateful to them for assisting us in preparing our students for competition!
Fall Field Trip Fun
DECA members were able to take a look behind the scenes to learn first hand how travel and tourism, advertising, promotion, and consumer buying habits affect our economy during the Halloween holiday season. Students enjoyed time at Honeysuckle Hill Farms, the Bell Witch Cave, and explored downtown Nashville from a historical perspective on a walking ghost tour of the city. We discussed how holidays affect the local economy through an increase in travel and tourism, as well as special considerations for running a seasonal business. Students had a blast on this Halloween themed field trip! To see all of the pictures from the trip, visit our Facebook page!

Broken Heads Broken Hearts
This year’s chapter public relations project is Broken Heads Broken Hearts. The campaign is focused on athletes in Sumner County playing contact or collision sports, with a main goal of educating players on the dangers of concussions. The Centers for Disease Control reports that anywhere from 1.6 million to 3.8 million concussions occur each year, with an estimated 300,000 alone from high school athletes. This number accounts for 21 percent of traumatic brain injuries in today’s youth.
While there is no way to prevent a concussion, there are ways to prepare for one, and “Broken Heads, Broken Hearts” is taking the initiative and working to make a difference in the way athletes look at concussions.
When a player sustains a concussion, many ignore their symptoms because they do not want to risk losing playing time or a starting position. Players do not realize that doing this puts them at an increased risk for developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (commonly referred to as CTE) or second impact syndrome, two degenerative diseases of the brain.
To combat this, project leaders Shelby Cage and Claira Tracy are utilizing the chapter to share information on the long-term effects of concussions. The campaign is planning and organizing events within the community in efforts to raise awareness about this growing problem. This past week Halloween candy grams were sold in the stop shop to promote the project. Also on Saturday Broken Heads Broken Hearts partnered with Portland DECA’s Every Step Every Breath project and set up a booth at their Organ Donation Isn’t Scary 5k and fun run.
