Dec. 6 - Reading Benchmark
Writing
We are continuing with the study of Greek and Latin roots and will have another quiz Friday, Dec. 1. Sentence construction will remain a focus. We will practice by referring to our Comma Flip Book to identify and apply using the four ways to use a comma within a sentence: commas in a series (CS), combining sentences with a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS), beginning a sentence with a subordinating conjunction or a long introductory phrase (LIP), and appositives, or interrupter (INT). The week of Dec. 4-8, the kids will be taking their Benchmarks in Writing, Reading, and Math.

Reading
We began frontloading background information for A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Charles Dickens before we left for our Thanksgiving break. We will be reading the dramatic version of his novella. It will be a great opportunity to read about the importance of focusing on the needs of others and having a spirit of goodwill and generosity towards all people. We will also be focusing on the elements of a play and how a play is different from other forms of literature. We will continue to look for conflicts and resolutions to those conflicts, character motivations, how the characters are developed, symbolism, figurative language, and vocabulary. We will watch the TNT version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL starring Patrick Stewart when we finish our unit. Please watch for a movie permission form this week your student will be bringing home. Your signature is needed for them to be able to watch the movie. Our hope is that through this unit of study our students will have the desire to look past themselves and look to meet others' needs--something from which we can all benefit.
The only homework our students have in Reading class is to READ for 20-30 minutes per night. Please encourage your student to read. Help them set aside the time to enrich their minds, vocabularies, and lives!
If your student is in one of Mrs. Webb's classes, you can join that class's Remind group.

Tutoring is for anyone struggling with a concept, needing help with corrections, reviewing for a quiz/test, or taking a re-test. Please continue to check Parent Portal to keep updated on your child's averages in their classes. Please contact me at any time if you have any questions or concerns and I will get back to you as soon as possible. My email address is cweaver@melissaisd.org.
Science
Students are able to correct any daily work or quiz by doing constructed response on the questions they missed. They can make up to a 100 on the corrected papers. They can also do constructed response for missed test questions and then do a re-test (except 9 weeks tests). We don't have many students taking advantage of these opportunities.
Students are welcome to attend tutorials, especially those students who are struggling. Mrs. McKoy has tutorials in the mornings Monday through Thursday, Mrs. Gabel has them Tuesday through Thursday after school, and Coach Whetzel has them Monday through Wednesday after school.
Thank you,
