The West Linn-Wilsonville School Board held a public meeting on Monday, February 10. The following are select highlights from that meeting.
School Board Recognizes Counselors for National School Counseling Week

District Presents Comprehensive Suicide Prevention Plan Update
The West Linn-Wilsonville Suicide Prevention Plan focuses on four key areas:
- Wellness Promotion
- Education
- Intervention
- Postvention
Staff shared examples of the district's suicide prevention plan and implementation across West Linn-Wilsonville schools. School Psychologist Mike Miller provided West Linn High School-specific updates, including the inclusion of Sources of Strength training this school year. Mr. Miller has worked with school counselors to interview more than 100 students, recruiting staff and students to engage with the wellness promotion curriculum and help spread messages of positivity across the school.
Brittany Bucholz shared updates from the district's Anxiety 101/102 and Calm, Connected Parenting Nights for mental health education, and Sunset Primary Counselor Mollie Hyman provided examples of Second Steps social-emotional curriculum that has been implemented at the primary and middle school level.
Staff highlighted the district's suicide prevention QPR training (Question, Persuade, Refer), which has been offered district-wide. Staff also provided information regarding the district's postvention strategies, including re-entry supports and the district's Crisis Response Flight Team. School Board Passes 2019 Capital Bond Resolutions
Resolution 2019-9 establishes a capital project fund for bond proceeds for when capital bonds are sold in February. This month, the West Linn-Wilsonville School District will sell approximately $150 million of the available $206.8 million to begin bond projects.
The Board also passed Resolution 2019-11, which refinances portions of the 2015 General Obligation Bond, saving approximately $4.8 million in bond interest payments over the remaining life of the bond. That portion of the Series 2015 Bonds become Refunding Bond Series 2020C with the approved resolution.
Board Recognizes Superintendent Dr. Kathy Ludwig For Receiving OALA Tom Ruhl Ally Award
The Tom Ruhl Ally Award is presented every year to non-Latino OALA members who have exhibited leadership in the areas of equity and cultural competence. Recognized leaders have implemented strategies or activities that align with OALA's mission, purpose, and goals in their district.
"This award really is a recognition of our School Board and of our entire district," Dr. Ludwig said during the Feb. 10 Board Meeting.
The West Linn-Wilsonville School District is an Institutional Sponsor of the OALA Conference, helping to push the organization's pivotal mission while increasing the capacity of Latino educators and administrators across the district and larger State.
