Circle Up!

October 2016

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Can you believe that it's October? It has been an amazing two months! We had over 250 parents and students attend Curriculum Night on September 12th, behavior referrals for the months of August and September were down almost 50% compared to last year, and yes, there is more! Athletically, we started off the year with a BANG! Our football team finished the season 8:1 and our softball was UNDEFEATED! And, our PTO "Cookies and Canvases" event was TOTALLY AMAZING!

Another noteworthy accomplishment is our PBIS implementation at SCMS! It’s working BIG TIME because our focus is identifying and glorifying the positive! Every month we host several events for the 99% of our students who consistently “DO THE RIGHT THING!” From “snack and chats” to “Dodge-ball Tournaments” to school-wide attendance raffles, we are consistently encouraging positive behaviors through our PBIS Stamp and recognition system! As a result of our diligent focus on the positive, our state RESA School Climate Specialist, who conducted our site observation on October 12th, was so impressed that he is interested in featuring OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL AT THE STATE LEVEL! WOOOT WOOOT!!! This is an amazing honor that we will proudly accept! Our kids are amazing and our school is amazing and I am so proud and honored to be in The Circle!

Yes, greatness is happening at Social Circle Middle School because The Circle is truly the BEST PLACE TO BE! Moving forward, please continue to enjoy this monthly newsletter which will provide you with school-wide updates, recognitions, and overall SCMS information. Parents, thank you for all of your amazing support! Teachers, thank you for providing outstanding instruction to our wonderful students. Students, thank you for being amazing learners. Other staff members, thank you so much for keeping everything in order so that teachers can teach and students can learn! I am so happy to be in the CIRCLE where... TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK!

I am loving The Circle and I am absolutely loving our SCMS!

AT SCMS... ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Every month we enter the names of students who have PERFECT attendance in a raffle! Last month, Tess Morrow won a Kindle! Awesome job Tess! And, on October 31st, another student with PERFECT attendance will win a DOK BLUETOOTH MULTI-CHARGING SPEAKER & A PORTABLE CHARGER!

Starting November 1st, every home room that has PERFECT attendance will be awarded a DONUTS AND DRINKS breakfast! In May, the homeroom with the most PERFECT attendance awards will win a pizza party!

In order to qualify for the PERFECT attendance raffles students must meet the following criteria for the month:

  • No absences
  • No tardies
  • No check-outs

At SCMS ATTENDANCE MATTERS!

Did you know....

Chronic Absence = Missing two or more days per month

Research shows students who miss 10 percent of school, or two days per month, show negative academic progress.

Dropout Indicator

By sixth grade, a chronically absent student is shown to have a significantly higher chance of dropping out of high school.

Excused Absences Hurt Tools

Excused absences also impact student achievement!

Every Minute Matters

If a student is 10 minutes late to school each day, this adds up to missing more than 33 hours of class time. A student with a 90 percent attendance average for Kindergarten through 12th grade will miss over a year of accumulated time in the classroom.

DONATION SHOUT OUT TO NANCY BARDY!

We would like to give a special LOUD shout out to Mrs. Nancy Bardy for donating money to cover two students for the 7th Grade field trip!!

Please know that Mrs. Bardy "attempted" to donate this money "silently!" She was not looking for a shout out or spot light! Her donation was given from that special place where altruism resides! Mrs. Bardy gave because her heart called her to help those who are less fortunate!

Mrs. Bardy, it is people like you who make all the difference! Because of you, two children, who otherwise would not be able to participate in the 7th grade field trip, will be heading to the Fernbank on Oct 19th! Thank you for making a huge difference for two of our children! Mrs. Bardy, thanks for sharing... because sharing is caring!

DONATION SHOUT OUT TO ERICA ALLEN!

During the week of October 10th, students voiced their concerns about the need for additional microwaves! Well, our wonderful PTO Media Coordinator, Mary Hupp, reached out to the community and posted our "need" on Facebook! And, within 1 day, Erica Allen, purchased a new microwave for our students! Yes, Teamwork really does make the dream work in "The Circle!" Mary, thanks for making our needs known to our awesome community and Erica Allen, thanks for answering the call!

Thank you Erica Allen for your compassionate heart and willingness to share... because sharing is caring!

As our coach we just wanted you to know how much

We appreciate every sacrifice you have made.

You have helped us grow as a team and as individuals.

We have learned that hard work really does pay off

and that excellence can be achieved.

You have been our biggest fan during our most triumphant moments,

and our rock when we came up short of our goal.

We can only hope that we have touched your life

as profoundly as you have touched ours.
