Event Description

On September 8, 1900 a category 4 hurricane made land fall in the city of Galveston.Estimated winds were 145 miles per hour.Over 8,000 people lost their lives.It was the deadliest hurricane in US history.

Ecological Impact

At least 3,600 houses were destroyed.10,000 people were left with no homes. Fishes died due to erosion.Most of the coastline was destroyed and a lot of soil was gone into the ocean.

Restoration Efforts

They built a seawall 17 feet high to absorb the force from waves from future hurricanes.They raised the elevation of all the buildings.They also made it incline so the water won't stay in.The government brought sand to rebuild the coastline.The government spent about $30 million to repair everything.
