It was great getting to see our Barry Pirates and their families back in the building this week for our back to school events! We had a great turnout and appreciate the efforts our families made to get our students ready for the upcoming school year!

Character Strong - Family Dares

As you may have seen at our back to school events, both middle schools are implementing a program called Character Strong. Not only will we be going through character lessons on a weekly basis with our students, but we also will be participating in "dares" that give us opportunity to put our character into action.

Each week, we will send a Family Dare via Barry news that we hope you will choose to participate in. Feel free to give us an update on how it is going (email, short video, phone call, etc.). We want to highlight the great things that come from this program and hope to partner in this effort between both the home and school fronts.

Please click on each picture below to learn about the Family Character Dare process.

Board Approved District Calendar

Please click here to access the approved calendar from last night's board meeting. The highlights are listed below:

  • Moving the First Day of School to September 8
  • Adding Staff Professional Development/Work Time from August 18 to September 4
  • Removing the September 16 Professional Learning Community (PLC) Day (2-hour early Dismissal)
  • Remaining District Inservice and PLC Days will follow the previous board-approved calendar. In-person students will be released 2 hours early on PLC Days
  • Adding language to asterisks for inclement weather days, alternating schedule, and to note that the Board of Education will review the calendar throughout the year for revision, as necessary.

Lanyards

We will be providing students a black lanyard that they can use to attach to their mask. At times when they need to take it off, this will help it hang from their lanyard instead of it possibly being lost or misplaced on a table/desk.

FERPA Virtual Learning Notice

As part of the 2020-2021 school year, your student will participate in virtual or distance learning. This virtual learning may occur via a digital platform like Canvas, Google Classroom, or Google Meets that will require participation by your student in a virtual setting with other students receiving the same services.

Due to the nature of virtual learning, it is possible the parent/guardian, sibling, or other related person of another student in your student’s class may hear or see your student as they are engaged in learning.

The Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office (“SPPO”) stated in its March 30, 2020 virtual learning guidance “a person merely seeing or hearing your student does not violate their or your rights under Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”). Another person sitting in the same room as your student is treated no differently than a visitor would be during an in-person class.” It is not possible or feasible for the District to dictate the location of other individuals present during virtual sessions within a student’s home.

Our staff members will take precautions to comply with District Policy and FERPA to prohibit and limit the disclosure of personally identifiable information. Additionally, please note District Policy KKB expressly prohibits recording any virtual classroom session. This long-standing policy exists to protect the rights of all students under FERPA.

I have been advised that my student may be seen or heard by other individuals present during virtual learning sessions. I have also been advised of the District’s prohibition on the recording of the virtual sessions and agree to comply with Policy KKB.

If you desire that your child not receive virtual education services, please contact your student’s building principal.

5TH GRADE FAMILIES

Virtual Meet the Teacher - 5th Grade

Please be on the lookout for an email from your 5th grade homeroom teacher inviting you to join them on a Google Meets virtual video call. We are planning on scheduling them between 5:30-6:30 pm on Tuesday, September 1st. You should receive the email prior to Monday evening of next week with the link to the meeting.

Team Black:

5:30-6:00: Stallo's Homeroom

6:00-6:30: Thompson's Homeroom

Team Orange:

5:30-6:00: Shoup's Homeroom

6:00-6:30: Petty's Homeroom

5th Grade Back to School Event

This past Monday you should have received an email from your homeroom teacher introducing themselves and informing you of what team you are on for this school year (Orange: Petty/Shoup or Black: Stallo/Thompson). In addition, there was a sign up genius link to select what time you would be coming between 2:30-6 pm on Wednesday, September 2nd.

We have decided to change this event to look more like our 6th-8th grade back to school events, so that families can see more of the building. Please watch this video to see what the evening will look like. In addition, the following checklist and map will be provided at check-in.

If you have signed up, please try to show up at that time. If you haven't, please know that you are still welcome to show up anytime on Wednesday, September 2nd between 2:30-6 pm.

Y Academy

For any family that is looking for additional child care on days that your 6th-8th grader is not at school in the face-to-face environment, the YMCA is offering a program called Y Academy. My understanding is that they will have staff present to assist with virtual learning at one of their locations in the Northland. You can see more information about this program below.

Middle School Sports Update

  • Home Middle School Football & Volleyball: Two spectators will be allowed per participant. There will be a roster with two spots to check off for each contestant at the gate. These two fans can sit together but need to be socially distanced from other fans.

  • Home Middle School Cross Country: At this time spectators will not be allowed at our home meet on Sept 14 at Platte Ridge Park due to the number of schools and athletes participating. If this determination gets changed, coaches will update parents before the meet.

  • Away MS Football, Volleyball & Cross Country: Spectator capacities and other logistics for away events may vary based on host school requirements, and coaches and sponsors will communicate details with teams and families.

Update from PE Coach Milne

Please see the graphic below. If you have any questions, please contact Coach Milne and copy Dr. Haniger and/or Dr. Adams.

6th Grade Families

Transitioning from elementary to middle school can be a big leap. Due to this, we typically have a 6th grade transition night for parents to come and hear from their 6th grade core teachers. Due to our current environment navigating COVID, it is difficult to have a large gathering of parents in a safe manner. Therefore, we have pivoted to a virtual environment to still be able to provide the information you need and answer questions as applicable.

Prior to September 9th, please use this link to watch five videos (roughly an hour) that cover the following topics:

  • Teacher Introductions
  • Support
  • Google Classroom
  • SIS and Grades
  • Expectations and Incentive Program

On Wednesday, September 9th from 6-7 pm, Dr. Haniger and our 6th grade core teachers will be available via Google Meets to answer any questions after you have watched the five videos linked above. We will send out that link in Barry News next Friday.

In the meantime, if you have any questions you would like to ask immediately, you can fill out the form below. Thanks!

6th Grade Chromebook Distribution

Platte County High School freshman turned in their chromebooks this week. Our technology department are getting them ready to go for our 6th graders in time for the start of school. We are told we will receive those Thursday morning of next week. Therefore, we are planning to have two dates/times for parents to come by and drive through to pick up their chromebook. Please ensure you have identification to verify your identity to ensure we are providing chromebooks to our current 6th graders.

Thursday, September 3rd from 1 pm - 6 pm

Friday, September 4th from 10 am - 4 pm

See below our map of Barry School. Please come through the front loop along the purple line that you see in the picture below. A staff member will meet you at your vehicle in front of our school to get the student's name. They will radio to the office to grab the chromebook and will bring it to your car.

If the lane along the purple line begins to get backed up, we will then begin to bring cars in a second line along the green arrow below.

REMOTE LEARNERS

Remote Learner Update

The following message was sent to our remote learning families yesterday:

We are very excited to start our year together in the remote setting. At this time Teachers have sent out “Meet the Teacher” emails introducing themselves and have asked you to sign up for a time to meet virtually so they can get to know you and your child. All of our meetings will happen through Google Meet and you can use a computer or the Google Meet App to participate. The teacher will send you a link to this meeting. “Meet the Teacher” virtual meetings will continue through September 1st.

If you have not received this email you may need to complete proof of residency or provide immunizations for your child. See the attachment to below learn more.

Open the attached Welcome to Remote Learning PDF to learn specifics about Chromebook pick up, optional Parent Meeting, and Google Helps.
