About Drills
Safety is one of our top priorities here at H.E. Corley Elementary School. Our staff and students practice fire evacuation drills, lockdowns/lockouts, and bad weather drills each year. These drills help us stay up to date on protocol and help us to have a proactive approach in keeping everyone safe and prepared in the event of a real emergency.
Our school, along with the rest of the schools in our district, will be working with law enforcement to practice our Lock-Down drill on Monday November 21st. Staff and students will not know the exact time of this drill to ensure authenticity. However, we wanted to make sure all of our families knew about this drill beforehand since it does involve officers on campus. Our staff and students will be trained ahead of time to know what to expect and how they should respond in an event such as this. Please do not be alarmed if you should come by the school and see law enforcement vehicles here sometime this month as we are most likely practicing.
It is important for you to know that you may not enter or leave the building once a lockdown drill has begun. Students may not be signed in or out during this time due to the nature of this drill. We apologize for any inconvenience this might be to you. Please remember that we are practicing to ensure safety at H.E. Corley Elementary School. Below are some questions and answers to help you better understand what to expect. If you should have any further questions, please call the main office at 803-476-4001.
What is a a Lock-Down Drill?
A Lockdown Drill is where all doors are locked and secured for safety. No one is to enter or exit the building until instructed by police.
Why can’t I sign in/out my child during the drill?
In a real lockdown situation no one can enter or exit so we must practice the same way. This helps everyone know exactly what to do in the event of a real emergency lockdown.
How long will it last?
The drill will last for about an hour.
How can I help?
Talk to your child about why we do this drill and to make sure they are listening to their teacher for instructions. Please reassure your child and let them know that police officers help keep us safe.
What is Student Quick Pay?
As a reminder, checks and cash or no longer accepted as payment. Student Quick Pay is the District 5 online payment system for student fees, chorus t-shirts, lost library books, etc. It is also known as Rycor.

Field Trips and Medication
If your student will require prescription medication on a field trip that is not currently being given at school you will need to provide a Permission for School Administration of Medication form to the nurse at the time the medication is provided. This form must be completed and signed by a medical doctor. Ideally the form and the medication should be provided to the nurse by the parent/guardian or designated adult at least two weeks prior to the field trip. This allows time for the nurse to verify that there are not any problems with the medication and/or consent form and to train the teacher to properly assist the student with the medications. This consent form is found on the district website under the Department of School Health Services, then click Health Room Forms, then Medication Consent Form. You may also request Nurse Boulware to send you the form.Call 803-476-4009 or email at bboulwar@lexrich5.org.
Dental Procedures and School Exclusion
Any student who has had sedation and/or an anesthetic due to a dental procedure should not return to school until the effects have completely worn off. The student should be back to normal with full feeling returned to the tongue and mouth. Students are at a higher risk of injuring their mouths if full feeling has not returned. A student who has had a tooth extraction should also remain at home until there is no active bleeding. Students should not return to school if they need to bite on a gauze pad or paper towel to control bleeding from the extraction.
Immunizations
Please continue to provide updated immunization certificates to the nurse. Request a new certificate to be provided for the school from the provider (Medical Doctor or DHEC) while you are at the facility whenever your child receives mandatory child care or school required vaccines.
Habit 4
These two students showed Habit #4: Think WIN WIN!
They are great partners by making deposits into each others' emotional bank accounts.
