What's Happening in 5th Grade?
Math
In math, students are multiplying large numbers and reviewing division. They are also learning how to divide by estimating and using compatible numbers.
ELA
In reading, we have finished up our units on Theme and Figurative Language. After Thanksgiving Break, we will be starting our new unit on Comparing and Contrasting in both fiction and non-fiction.
In writing, we are continuing our hard work on creating 3rd person narratives. We are working on how to incorporate dialogue into our stories and develop our characters in a way that makes them interesting. We will also be studying various writing techniques such as word choice, using transition words, creating a setting, and having a clear beginning, middle, and end.
AR Goals Update
During reading conferences, I worked with students to select books that are at their reading level, have appropriate content, and are INTERESTING to them. We then created a reading planner which lays out the number of pages to be read each day and a goal of when the book needs to be finished. This seems to be helping out a lot of kiddos!
Ask your child what book they are reading, and have them retell the main events that have happened so far! Also, share what book you are reading and what your favorite things about it have been. This is a great way to start a conversation about READING!
Science and Social Studies
Science
We have continued to explore differences between chemical and physical changes in matter during our unit of study on Changes in Matter. We recently learned that when matter undergoes a physical or chemical change, the mass of the matter remains constant. We learned that this idea is known as the Law of Conservation of Matter.
We will continue to observe how matter changes as we learn about mixtures and solutions. We will discover that a mixture occurs when different materials are placed together but that each material in the mixture keeps its own properties. We will also investigate a solution as a mixture in which substances are spread out evenly. We will be finishing our unit on Changes in Matter soon.
Social Studies
We recently finished our unit of study on Economics and took our unit test this past Friday, November 22. The test will be coming home at the end of this short two day week.
We will start our unit this week on the American Revolution. In the weeks before the holiday break, we will be exploring events leading up to the Revolutionary War and examine some of the causes of the war. We will begin our unit this week with exploring the location and characteristics of each of the British colonies in North America.
We have also recently completed our unit on states and capitals and regions of the United States. During this unit, students had the opportunity to participate in our Geography Masters challenge with their states and capitals quizzes. Students who scored 90% accuracy or higher on each quiz for each region including the Oceans and Continents quiz were eligible for the Geography Masters Celebration. Students had the option of 2 attempts at each quiz (original quiz and a retake if needed). A celebration lunch will be held this week for students who have qualified for the challenge.
