Florence 1 Schools 2019 Writing Award Winners Announced
Fifth grader, Marquis Miles, a student at John W. Moore Intermediate School, and eighth grader, Jevon Brown, a student at Williams Middle School, have been selected as the 2018-19
Florence 1 Schools Writing Awards Program winning recipients.
Marquis’ winning essay discussed the communication revolution in America, and Jevon’s writing discussed the evolution and growth of Florence from an historical perspective. The district writing program seeks to integrate teaching and instructional objectives, content, and
standards in English Language Arts, Science, and Social Studies specific to each grade level. Students in both fifth and eighth grade classes across the district participate in the program yearly.
School level winners’ essays are chosen from class level winners as finalists for the district level selection. Each school and all class winners will be recognized during an awards program at their respective schools in late May. Judges note that this year’s essays were informative and thoroughly addressed the essay topics and contained a strong sense of voice. Marquis’ teacher at Moore is Ms. Shatoya Mouzon and Jevon’s teacher at Williams is Ms. Kristen Cue.
The following students are being recognized as their school’s top winners: Keira Mitschelen (Greenwood); Alaya Poston (Savannah Grove); Jayden Renee (Wallace Gregg); Samantha
Rogers (Timrod); Jackson Snowden (North Vista); Patience Williamson (Lester); Summer Ashton (Sneed); and Imani Cobb (Southside).
