Note from Dr. Eicher
Dear John Burroughs Families,
The 2023-2024 school year is underway and off to a great start at John Burroughs Elementary School. Students and teachers have settled into their classes and daily routines. It is so nice to see all the students and staff back in the school ready to engage in an exciting year of learning and personal and professional growth. Here is our new mission and vision for ’23-24.
Mission: We embrace all families as partners in our commitment to developing the whole child in a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment.
Vision: Our Burroughs community provides an environment where all children feel loved, respected, and encouraged to develop their full potential.
We have worked to get the year off to a strong start by building community, daily routines and activities, positive behavioral supports, and social emotional learning activities. Each month we focus on a character trait such as respect or responsibility. Students are then rewarded for demonstrating these character traits through daily Bee Bucks tickets, names announced on the morning announcements for recognition, and a trip to our new Bee Bucks store for additional weekly recognition.
We are also partnering again with the Final Third Foundation which provides daily soccer and literacy activities at recess if your child chooses to participate. Students can participate in soccer each week during their recess time. Soccer has been a big win at recess as many of our students look forward to participating every day. We have expanded the soccer opportunities to our kindergartners and first grade students this year in addition to students in grades 2-5. We are also working to provide additional structured play activities during recess such as basketball, four-square, jump rope and even corn hole!
I wanted to also let you know about our fall open house, harvest celebration, and additional opportunities to meet with your child’s teacher. Here are the upcoming dates:
- Open House – Tuesday September 26, 4:30pm to 6:00pm
- Fall Conferences – Tuesday October 24 and Thursday November 9, 3:45 to 7:15pm
- Fall Celebration – Friday October 27 2:00-3:15 pm
We hope to see you at John Burroughs Elementary School at one of our upcoming events.
With Burroughs pride,
Dr. Mike Eicher, Principal

Note from Nurse Kristina
Our school nurse this year is Kristina Gloriosa, BSN, RN. She is available Monday through Friday. Here are some reminders from her:
- For the 2023-2024 school year, our school will follow state mandated health screenings for students (ORC 3313.69). This typically includes vision and hearing, but may also include blood pressure, a dental screen, and body mass index (BMI).
- AVOID IMMUNIZATION EXCLUSION September 13th, 2023. Be certain your student is up to date on their immunizations. Please call your physician for details if you are unsure or reach out to Nurse Kristina.
- · As a reminder to parents, both over-the-counter medications and prescription medications (including asthma inhalers and epi-pens) need a medication authorization form completed by both parent and health care provider. These forms are available online at http://www.ccsoh.us From there, select Departments > CCS Health Services > Guidelines for Medications at School > Medication Authorization Forms.
- · Please feel free to call Nurse Kristina at 365-5923 ext. 75874 or email kgloriosa@columbus.k12.oh.us to discuss your child’s specific health needs.

PBIS at Burroughs
At John Burroughs Elementary teachers and staff members use positive reinforcement with students to build relationships and create nurturing environments. Our students earn BEE BUCKS for positive behavior at Burroughs. These BEE BUCKS help classes and grades earn prizes throughout the year. A student's BEE BUCK may randomly get drawn for an individual prize as well.
There are instances where students may cause a disruption to the the classroom or school environment and we have a plan for these instances.
Sometimes the behavior is minor and can be handled by the teacher or staff member within the classroom or the PEAK room (a separate space for students to calm down and work on their behavior).
Minor Behaviors:
Disrespectful Behavior, Minor Insubordination (refusal to complete work, not following directions the first time). Profanity/Inappropriate Language, Dress Code Violation, Student on Student Conflict , Minor Technology Violation (access unauthorized websites), Minor Property Misuse (drawing on desks, ripping items off walls, damaging supplies).
Other times the behavior may be considered major and the student may be referred to the office or principal for consequences.
Major Behaviors:
3 Minor incidences for same behavior, Fighting/Threats, Theft, Vandalism/Property Damage, Repeated Bullying Behaviors, Volatile Acts, Serious Technology Violation (social media threats, etc.).
Please contact your child's teacher or Dr. Eicher with any questions you may have about discipline at Burroughs.
Character Strong: Respect
Every month we focus on a different character trait at Burroughs. In September we are focusing on Respect. As we learn about the character trait, teachers will nominate a student each week that exhibits that character trait at school.
These students will be celebrated on Wednesdays through recognition during the announcements, a certificate and small gift, and by participating in the Bee Kind Squad at dismissal. The Bee Kind Squad will cheer their classmates out of their classes with foam fingers and high-fives! Everyone is encouraged to participate in these Kindness Wednesdays by wearing a kindness shirt or button to spread Kindness at our school! Let's all work together to Bee Kind!
