St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 3, WEEK 9 | 19 SEPTEMBER 2019
"Trust in God who helps you in all things."
St. Mary of the Cross MacKillop
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Carers
Community is one of the many strengths of our school and as the term draws to a close I would like to thank our P&F and the parents who volunteer the gift of their time to ensure that events on our calendar are successfully run. This term some of these events have included our annual school disco, Father’s Day breakfast celebration, sausage sizzle on Open Night and more recently the P&F major fundraiser, The Retro Musical Bingo. This event was an outstanding success not only from a financial perspective, but from the sheer enjoyment of spending an evening singing out aloud to some of our old favourite songs from the 80’s and 90’s. The tireless investment of time and energy by the many parent volunteers who put their hands up time and time again to organise and assist, truly enriches the lives of our students and families, so a big thank to each and every one of you.
On Tuesday night at our school’s Open Night, we showcased the work that reflects the excellent standard of teaching and learning at St Columba’s and the partnership we have with you in your children’s education. I would like to thank our teachers and education assistants for the time they spend each and every day preparing, planning, teaching, assessing and reflecting for the students at St Columba’s. Your effort and hard work is much appreciated and this sentiment was echoed by many parents on the evening.
On Wednesday this week, Mr John McGrath, MLA for South Perth, came to our school to judge the annual Art Exhibition. He was extremely impressed with the high standard of art on display and commented on the professional set-up of our Art Room as a gallery. Merit Award recipients and the Junior and Senior Art winners will be announced at an assembly towards the end of Term 4.
Tomorrow we look forward to a wonderful day at our Sports Carnival when students will have the opportunity to participate in individual races and team games. We wish all participants the very best of luck and I know we will see many examples of students encouraging one another in their endeavours on the day.
May God Bless you and your family.

Art Exhibition
Picasso said: “Every child is an artist” and this was evident in the stunning artwork on display at Open Night’s Art Exhibition. Our Visual Arts teacher Mrs Melissa Govorko has done a wonderful job of nurturing the creativity of St Columba’s children.
Calling for Sewing Volunteers
We are making up Religious Education boxes for each classroom which include items for our prayer tables. We have pieces of fabric that need to be cut into 4 strips and overlocked. There are 20 boxes with 4 coloured strips of fabric per box. If we can get several volunteers we would be most appreciative. Please contact the front office if you are able to assist.
Performing Arts Costumes
Please return any borrowed costumes from Performing Arts as soon as possible as I am sorting through all of them in the next few days.
We have some bags of costumes which need to be washed. If you can assist with washing please collect from the office. Any assistance with this task is greatly appreciated.

CSPSWA Attendance Strategy Survey
Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) is currently developing an Attendance Strategy for Catholic schools. It is well recognised that regular attendance at school results in lifelong learning benefits and helps our children to become productive and responsible adults.
Catholic School Parents WA (CSPWA) is partnering with CEWA in this important work as parents play a significant role in attendance and it is important, we hear your views.
A CONFIDENTIAL survey is being conducted across the state to collect your thoughts and assumptions regarding attendance and a link is provided below.
This is a significant opportunity for parents to have input into the Attendance Strategy and therefore we urge as many parents as possible to participate in the survey. Your feedback will help to inform the final strategy, this survey will close next Tuesday, 24 September 2019.
If you have any additional queries please contact Siobhan Allen, Executive Director, CSPWA, siobhan@csp.wa.edu.au.
