"Deciding Which Vocabulary Words to Teach"
Michael Graves and several of his colleagues developed the SWIT (Selecting Words for Instruction from Text) process after a 3-year study on how educators choose vocabulary words for study. The process identifies four types of words that educators should focus on when determining important words from text-essential words, valuable words, accessible words, and imported words.
