Saranac High School Counseling News
January 2023
Happy New Year!
Mr. Johnson will be joining our counseling office on Monday, January 9th, as our new school counselor. We are very sad to see Mrs. Sproule go and she will be missed, but we know that Mr. Johnson will be a great addition to our team. Below you will find a brief bio.
In our "Mental Health and Social Wellness Corner" we have included a few articles on teen mental health, social media use, and what you can do if your kid is being the bully.
Welcome Mr. Johnson
Mr. Johnson graduated from AuSable Valley High School. He received his undergraduate degree from Castleton University in health sciences and his graduate degree from SUNY Plattsburgh. This is his 12th year in education in several different roles. Most recently, he has served Chazy Central School as the Student Advocate where he provided counseling services for students K-12. The best parts of his job(s) have been seeing students succeed, particularly the ones who had obstacles stacked against them. When he is not in school, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching sports, and traveling. In addition, he is the incoming Chief of Morrisonville EMS and teaches the basic EMT class at Clinton Community College. He lives in Cadyville with his fiancé and two Frenchies.
College/Career Kick Off for Juniors!
On February 3rd we will be doing presentations in ELA for our juniors. This presentation is the kickoff for all things college and/or career related. We will do a similar presentation for parent(s)/guardian(s) of juniors in the spring and will inform you as soon as we have set a date.
Individual Progress Reviews
We begin planning for next school year with students at the beginning of February. Juniors will meet one on one for their "Individual Progress Review" with their school counselor. These annual meetings are extremely valuable to help students discuss and plan for their future. When we conclude with juniors we will move on to sophomores and then to freshmen.
CV-TEC Career Day Field Trip for Sophomores
On February 9th we will be taking interested sophomores to CV-TEC for approximately half the school day. Saranac High School will attend in the morning. CV-TEC is a great opportunity for students, and this field trip gives them an opportunity to see what options are offered. Interested students should pick up a hard copy of the "Career Day Admission Form" in the counseling office or bring the form posted below back with their three program choices. Paperwork is due Friday, February 3rd to Mrs. Venne. Check out the programs below using the mini-video clips.
Career Cruising for Freshmen
We will be conducting our Career Cruising assessment with our freshmen in ELA January 16th or January 17th. This is a great way for students to see how their strengths and interests fit into career opportunities. Students will use the information they get from the assessment to do further research for an English research project, and then we will use the information in their "Individual Progress Review."
