New Learning Communities train medical students differently
An emerging trend in medical education, learning communities are small groups of new students and experienced students led by faculty mentors. These longitudinal relationships allow medical students to form connections with students graduating ahead of them, and following behind them encouraging their development of clinical skills, professional identity and wellness. The JABSOM ʻOhana mourns the loss of Pediatrician Calvin C. J. Sia, MD, FAAP
A champion for children with special needs, abused children, and those children without access to medical care, Dr. Calvin C.J. Sia affected broad changes in both the national and international worlds of children’s medical and emergency care for more than 40 years. Dr. Sia died on August 19, 2020. Read more at UH Med Now.
Hawaii Summer Internship Program (SIP) in Neuroscience Research
The 2019 HPN-SIP cohort included 30 students from the high school to the graduate school level and included JABSOM students. During the 8-week intensive program, interns interact directly with neuroscience specialists while working in a clinical research setting. Kaua‘i Planning & Action Alliance address youth issues
A Kaua‘i nonprofit created a project that was recently approved for a Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act grant. The group’s goal is to create positive activities for keiki and their families for the purpose of building youth resilience, promoting healthy exercise, addressing mental health issues, and suicide prevention. Dr. Deborah Goebert, Department of Psychiatry is involved with the project. Read more at The Garden Island.
JABSOM scientific legend Dr. Ryuzo Yanagimachi "Yana" turns 92!
Happy Birthday Yana! The founder of the Institute for Biogenesis Research turned 92 years old this week and in lieu of a party, was presented with a cake and card. The UH Professor Emeritus continues to inspire his colleagues at the IBR, which he founded in Sept. 2000, by continuing to work diligently, publishing papers and carrying out experiments. His secrets to a long healthy life include daily stretching and finding a job you enjoy. Watch his advice, below.
