Thank you Gwen, Miki, Chuck, and Pam for volunteering last Wednesday! We couldn't have the co-op without our amazing volunteers!!
If you are interested in volunteering but unsure exactly what that involves, please let Nora know and she will do a quick "volunteer orientation" with you on a day/time that you pick up.

Question about coffee - very interesting...
Question:
Hi, Whatever happened to the Java Cidiwey? I used to buy it through Nora's co-op in Suwanee.I still miss it!
-Cindy Smith
Suwanee, GA
Answer:
Hi Cindy,
Your question is an interesting one and I’ll take you into the world of green buying to answer it.
First thing to know is they grade coffee beans based on quality. Much like grades of meat. For coffee there is specialty grade, fine grade and commodity grade. Specialty grade is what we buy and it is the top 3-5% of beans. The total quantity of beans each year isn’t very much.
Second, importers are the buyers of the beans at origin. Some very large coffee roasters also buy direct.
Third, because coffee is an agricultural product generally there is one big harvest per year. Sometimes there is a second smaller harvest in some regions.
So, for importers who are buying in this specialty grade tier of coffee getting contracts on the beans you want is very competitive in the global marketplace. If an importer has a coffee that their customers demand they sometimes put a contract on an entire crop of beans before they are even harvested to ensure they get that coffee. Also if they do this they have exclusivity on that coffee and can charge a premium. This is is what happened to the Java Ciwidey. It became unavailable in the marketplace for us because someone contracted it before harvest with a multi-year contract. (Great for those farmers) We had to replace it with another coffee. We chose the Sumatra Lintong since it has similar flavor notes.
We’ve also had to switch out coffees because of natural disasters...volcanic eruptions in Sumatra, plant disease in Central America and we had a Nicaraguan coffee held at port for a while due to unrest in the country. We weren’t sure we’d get that coffee.
Green coffee selection and buying is the hardest part of what we do. We have to predict our consumption needs for 12 months and buy it upfront when the new crop hits the market. Once we buy our quantities we hope we’ve done it right. If we run out before next crop is available, there’s no buying more.
Thanks for your question and I hope this very long answer gave a little more background to why we don’t have the Java Ciwidey any longer. We miss it too.
It’s buying season now for Southern Hemisphere coffees. I’m attaching a picture of our warehouse taken yesterday. There’s probably 14,000-15,000# of green coffee in the warehouse right now.

New Wellness Partner: ATL Restorative Massage
Our market is just 1 piece of the wellness puzzle. We love that we have connections to other wellness providers that can offer other services or opportunity to help you through your wellness journey!
Grand Opening - ATL Restorative Massage Opens Massage and Workouts Studio in Buford!
ATL Restorative Massage is celebrating our Grand Opening during the month of April. We are timing the official Grand Opening Day in conjunction with Buford’s Spring Festival on Sat, April 13 th . Won’t you come celebrate with us?
All co-op members and vendors are invited to meet the staff from 11:00am-4:00pm at our Buford Spring Festival booth, near the Bona Allen Mansion (between S. Hill and S. Wilson on Main St in Old Town Buford.) After enjoying the festival, you’ll be thirsty, so head over to the studio at 10 Garnett St NE #1-B, Buford 30518, from 11:00am-6:00pm for lemonade, cookies and a free vial of Stress Relief oil, made from our co-op’s Southern Essentials therapeutic oils.
Here is a little information about ATL Restorative Massage…
About the therapist:
I’m Joseph Nichols. I grew up in Suwanee, and my dad, mom and uncle, (Alan Nichols, Pam Wilkinson & Chuck Wilkinson,) have been part of Suwanee Co-op for many years -- since Nora delivered out of her garage! A healthy lifestyle and physical fitness are important to me, which is why I chose to become a licensed massage therapist.
Why are you opening a studio?
I’ve operated a mobile massage business since 2012. By opening a studio and adding additional licensed therapists, we can offer a broader range of expertise in many different types of massage, stretching and exercise therapy.
What services do you offer?
My goal is to help people become healthier inside and out. My staff and I focus on stress relief and better health thru different types of massage therapies and fitness workouts. Just a few of these modalities include deep-tissue massage, Thai massage, therapeutic massage, cupping, Graston and others. Where my passion lies, though, and I’m developing a series of courses on this, is motivating people to achieve direction, purpose and fulfillment. One can accomplish this this through guided meditation, becoming centered or grounded, and examining how you perceive the world around you. Our first course in this series is slated for release this Spring.
How do we find you?
Our new studio is located on the lower level of the Advanced Colorations Salon building, at 10 Garnett St NE #1-B, Buford 30518. You can make an appointment or just ask for more information by calling (404) 793-6836. We work by appointment and still do mobile massages as well, so if you just drop by and we don’t answer, we are with a client. You can learn more by visiting our website at www.MassageandWorkouts.com, or by visiting on Sat, April 13 th .
We are looking forward to working with you on your health journey!
