Principal's Corner
Dear Lake Forest Community High School,
Happy snowy Friday! I just finished watching our Sectional Champions Dance Team perform at State, and as the commenter broadcasted to everyone: It was perfection! How lucky am I that I get to spend everyday with students?
Good luck to our Cheer team who compete in sectionals tomorrow at Belvidere North High School!
This past week was a long one–from Portrait of a Learner strategic planning to welcoming many of our rising 9th grade parents at LFHS 101. It was a packed house, and I was so proud of my team who presented with passion, commitment, and our students always at the center of our why. With course registration upon us for next year (!) I hope that you take time to look over the course offerings with your students–there are many opportunities for success, many pathways to academic excellence, and so many passions and interests that can be explored. We are small(er) but mighty.
A parent reached out to us about the resurgence of Omegle, an application that puts people in direct contact with complete strangers. Here is a quick article with a short video segment about it–and I would encourage you to watch it and to remain vigilant. It is vital that our students feel connected to OUR community and that they have trusted adults within the school whom they can come to when they need help. A great resource that I have shared on a few occasions is Common Sense Media–This is an organization that stays current and provides ideas and insights that might be worth considering.
Another information database that I have been asked by our community to reshare is the IL Sex Offender registry. There is a map function and a link to the National Sex Offender website among other links as well. Information and awareness are two important parts to keeping our students and community as safe as possible.
Finally, please read below for much more information, celebrations (Clap Outs), and to reserve your Wild Dust tickets for next weekend!
Stay warm, LFHS!
Erin Lenart, Ed.D.

SCOUTS NEED TO KNOW
Project Safe Prom
Saturday, May 6th will be a Stary Night for Dancing in the Moonlight at the first traditional prom in three years!
Ticket sales, Junior Class fundraising, APT volunteers and parent donations make this magical and unforgettable experience sparkle. In an effort to make it possible for all Juniors and Seniors to attend prom, each ticket is expected to remain $95 per person, which includes plated dinner, entertainment, transportation, and security. However, the actual cost to host prom far exceeds the ticket price & we need your help.
Please help make this Starry Night shine for all students. Any contribution you are able to make is tax deductible and greatly appreciated. Donate today: https://lakeforest.revtrak.net/Project-Safe-Prom/
Spring Break Date Correction
There was a misprint in a prior communication about our Spring break dates. Our Spring break begins on Friday, March 24th through March 31st. School resumes on April 3, 2023
A Few Important Facts and Reminders from the Dean's Office
VAPING incidents
Two fire alarms went off during the week of January 16, 2023, which necessitated the evacuation of our entire building. The Lake Forest Fire Department and Lake Forest Police Department responded to our school on both occasions and were able to determine which alarm was set off. In both instances, the alarms were located in bathrooms and student vaping triggered them. In addition, students have also been caught vaping in other areas of the school building, including hallways, stairwells, and cars parked on campus. We feel it is important for us to take this opportunity to talk to you about vaping and the negative impact it is having on our students. Not only is vaping extremely addictive, it is also very harmful to the human body. Please take a moment to go over the risks of vaping for yourself and your children.
Quick Facts on the Risks of E-cigarettes for Kids, Teens, and Young Adults | CDC
Please have a conversation with your children regarding the impact of vaping. DO NOT assume that your child has been able to avoid vaping. The demographic of students who are vaping is widely varied, and the frequency with which this is happening is still excessive. We use the statement “trust, but verify” when we talk to students about tough topics. As parents/guardians, you want to build trust with your children, and we find that using this statement will help maintain the level of trust that has been established.
The ramifications for vaping have both school and legal consequences. Students will be subject to suspension and will be ticketed by the Lake Forest Police Department under the current local ordinance.
If you have concerns about your student and vaping, please feel free to reach out to their CORE team (dean, social worker or counselor) for support and resources.
ATTENDANCE REMINDERS:
2022-2023 update: There has been a renewed commitment by the high school to enforce attendance policies. While there has been improvement from last year, we still have a long way to go!
One way you can help! If your student is going to be absent for a full day, come late, or leave early, PLEASE call or email the school (attendance115@lfschools.net) the DAY of the absence! This will avoid your student receiving a pink slip stating that they have an undetermined absence.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: The attendance policy in order to be in compliance with the state of Illinois School Code is in effect. Students who exceed 9 absences per class per semester will be considered “under review” by the Deans’ Office.
The 9 absences includes all Parental Excusals (P) and Unexcused absences (U)
Students that are “under review” will have one or more of the following actions:
A meeting with parent/guardian, student, teacher and dean
An attendance plan created for the remainder of the semester
Possible grade reduction
Removal from class and enlisted in credit recovery
The 9 absences does NOT include absences where a student is sent home by the nurse (N), working with a counselor or social worker (C or SS), on a field trip (FT) or College Visit (CV - please see the school’s policy in the handbook in regards to number of allowed/excused visits), Medical emergency where a student is not allowed in the building per a doctor’s note (M), Quarantine due to COVID19 (Q)
UNEXCUSED ABSENCES: Students who receive an unexcused absence in a class (also known as skipping a class) will receive a 30 minute detention. On the second unexcused absence, the student will earn a Saturday detention (3 hours). If a student does not attend the Saturday detention they will not be allowed to attend any athletics/clubs/activities until 3 hours worth of AFTER school detentions are served (morning detention will NOT be an option in this situation).
TARDIES: Students tardy to class will be notified by their teacher when they arrive late. Tardies will be marked in PowerSchool. Every three tardies a student receives in a class will result in notification being sent home. (3, 6, 9, 12 tardies for example).
Students will receive a warning from the deans’ office on their 3rd tardy
Students will earn a 30 minute detention after 6 tardies
Students will earn a 60 minute detention after 9 tardies and a conversation with the student, teacher, parent/guardian, and dean
Students will earn a 3 hour Saturday detention after 12 tardies
All 30 and 60 minute detentions must be completed within 24 hours of being issued
All Saturday detentions must be completed on the Saturday of the week they were issued
For information on ALL Detentions please see below
DETENTIONS: Students who receive a detention(s) for any reason (attendance, tardies, disciplinary) will be required to serve that detention within 24 hours. Detentions will be served in the testing center. Students will have the option to serve detentions either before school (open 7:30am until the start of school) or after school (3:30pm - 4:30pm)
STUDENTS WHO HAVE NOT SERVED THEIR DETENTIONS IN THE TIME ALLOTTED WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN ATHLETICS/CLUBS/ACTIVITIES UNTIL THEIR DETENTION IS SERVED!
SOCIAL PROBATION: Students who are not in good standing with the Deans’ Office will not be allowed at school events outside of the school day, including but not limited to dances, football games and basketball games. Social probation includes failure to serve detentions and/or Saturday detentions.
Reminder - Tuesday, February 21st Is Now A Day Of Instruction
Tuesday, February 21st was originally scheduled to be an embedded emergency day. With Election Day being declared a day of non-attendance, we switched February 21st back to a day of attendance. The next embedded emergency day is scheduled for Friday, April 21st.

COME SEE THE WINTER SHOW: Wild Dust by Flip Kobler
February 2-4, 7PM, Little Theater
Directed by Joe Pulio & Sara Dreiling, Technical Direction by Mary Toledano
Remember when the west was wild, the women were soft and the men were brave? Well, think again 'cause the worst dust storm of the 1800s is about to hit town and the men have all skedaddled! They're driving their precious cattle to safe shelter, leaving the women to fend for themselves. Tensions flare and sparks fly when society ladies are forced to take refuge with fallen women in the only safe building in town, the brothel.
