If only ...
Twin Oaks Families:
Ralph Waldo Emerson is quoted as saying "Happiness is a perfume you cannot pour on others without getting some on yourself." Each day as I enter the Twin Oaks building, I am greeted by students who are genuinely happy to see me. Their love and acceptance is unconditional. They don't ask me about my political leanings. They don't know if I'm rich or poor. They don't care how many degrees I may or may not have. They don't question my intent. They simply love me for who I am. If we could bottle their innocent, unfiltered love, what a magic potion it would be! We could heal the entire world with such a powerful elixir. If only...
What's happening in School this week: During our counseling lessons this week, we will finish up our 6 part series from Committee for Children's Second Step Child Protection Unit. Lesson 6 reviews all the key concepts of the unit: the "8 Never Nevers," the "Always Ask First" Rule, the "3 R's" (Recognize, Refuse, Report), the "Touching Rule" and the "Never Keep Secrets Rule." Please see the colorful note in your child's Friday folder with a recap of the lesson and links to the website for further information.
My thoughts about the Child Protection Unit: As I say to my students, I don't enjoy teaching kids about unpleasant and dangerous things in the world. However, when I was a child, teachers and parents rarely (never?) spoke openly about such things to us. Consequently, many children suffered from sexual abuse in silence. I believe the most important rule to remind our children is that we never keep secrets about a broken touching rule. I am proud to bring this topic into the light, and to hopefully prevent the needless suffering of innocent children.
