Principal's Message
Hello EMS Community,
Spring Break is just around the corner. It's typically a time where many of you leave town for vacation, some even leaving a couple of days early. If you are planning to leave prior to the weekend, please be sure to call the attendance line to let us know.
Well, our bond construction is underway. EMS will be getting a $25 million upgrade which is scheduled from last week until December 31st, 2019. There will be large areas outside on the back courtyard and fields that will be fenced off for the remainder of the school year. We will be working with our staff and students to adjust our lunchtime recess plan and PE outside activities. We've already adjusted our emergency evacuation routes and practiced them with our students on last Friday. I will be sending out more information throughout the spring to keep you informed.
Below are several photos from last week, as well as important information that will help keep you up to date with things happening around Evergreen.
Have a great week!!

Regarding: Notification of Planned Asbestos Abatement
Dear Evergreen Parents, Students, and Staff:
This letter is to notify you of some upcoming asbestos abatement work at Evergreen Middle School. This work is being performed as part of the bond renovation project and the work will take place over the 2019 spring break and 2019 summer break. Work areas will be physically isolated from the rest of the building and will be inaccessible to students and staff. Warning signs and barricades will be in place to delineate the asbestos work areas in accordance with Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Administration requirements.
The abatement work will be performed by IRS Environmental, a licensed asbestos abatement contractor, using appropriate engineering controls and work practices and following applicable regulations. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will be notified at least 10 days prior to the start of asbestos abatement.
The asbestos abatement project was designed by a certified Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) Project Designer. PBS Engineering and Environmental Inc. (PBS) will be on site as the District’s representative to closely monitor the asbestos abatement activities. PBS will collect air samples from outside of the regulated areas to confirm the effectiveness of engineering controls and work practices, perform post-abatement visual inspections, and collect final air clearance samples in accordance with AHERA regulations.
Asbestos abatement work practices and engineering controls are well established and proven to be effective in preventing asbestos exposures outside of regulated work areas. The post-abatement air clearance sampling protocol for schools is set forth in the AHERA regulations and is significantly more stringent than DEQ regulations.
Please direct any questions or concerns relating to this project to:
Hillsboro School District

Volunteer Opportunities - MENTORS NEEDED!!
The Washington County Juvenile Department is seeking adult mentors who want to make a difference in the life of an at-risk youth. They currently have six boys waiting for a mentor so men are desperately needed! Applicants must pass a criminal and driving background check and be willing to spend 8 hours a month with your youth for six months. This is a great opportunity to make a difference in your community. These kids are fantastic, just wait until you meet one!

7th Graders Forecast this Thursday during Advisory
While our 8th graders will be participating in the CCP Fair on Thursday during advisory, the 7th graders will be forecasting for their next year's elective courses. The following link will take you to the short presentation/slideshow that they will experience during that time. Students will be responsible for taking home their forecasting sheet on Thursday afternoon to look over with their parents and bring back signed by a parent/guardian. Please be sure to ask for the forecasting sheet on Thursday afternoon.

8TH GRADERS: TRANSPORTATION SUMMER CAMPS FOR OREGON HIGH SCHOOLERS
We're offering eighty full scholarships to four transportation summer camps in Oregon for high school students interested or curious about urban planning, engineering, STEM or transportation policy careers.
Three of the four summer camps are only open to female / female-identified students. Although women represent 50% of the workforce, their representation in transportation careers is less than 15%. We're committed to addressing this disparity, by giving additional support to girls in STEM-related careers and the transportation workforce.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE? High school students residing in Oregon, entering 9-12 grade in the 2019/20 school year with at least a 2.0 GPA. Please see each camp for more information about eligibility.
WHAT IS THE COST? The camps are free, but capacity is limited. Admittance is through a scholarship application, due April 1st.

WEEKLY ATTENDANCE PERCENTAGES
When you look at attendance percentages, whether it is a school or individual, here is how it compares if you received a grade for attendance.
- >95%=A
- 93%-95%=B
- 91%-93%=C
- 90%-91%=D
- <90 =F (Chronically absent)
So looking below at last week's attendance, we had 5 C's. Our goal is to reach the A level each day of each week. When students are here, it makes everything run more smoothly.

You can still sign up for Evergreen Bike Club
It will be an amazing experience as students attend the club twice a week and learn about mechanics. Students will repair bikes, and completely overhaul some as well. Each student who participates as a club member will also receive a bike for themselves.
Mon./Wed. Spots are still available for Homework Club
Looking Ahead - Advisory
On Mondays during Advisory, our students are given an opportunity to fill in their planners with the Looking Ahead document. This document is a good resource for students to see what is coming up in each of their classes for the week and to remind them of deadline/tests. Updated Looking Aheads will be posted to our website on Mondays.
