Captain's Log
PASS CHRISTIAN PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT
AHOY, PIRATES!
In the last principal's meeting, principals were asked to take a deep look at our inclusion and intervention processes as they relate to and beyond the MTSS process. Why are we doing this? I am glad you asked! We have noticed that our students who have a disability are not performing at the level we would like as measured by several measures including performance on state and local assessments, quarterly grades, graduation rate, and behavior. Further, this subgroup is performing below their peers in schools across the state. To align with our beliefs that students excel when they have an equal opportunity to learn and learning is shared responsibility, we must open ourselves to the discussion to allow for a solution.
We would love to hear from you, regular and special educators, to see what your ideas on changing the trajectory for our children are. We certainly understand that they learn at different rates and in different ways, yet in honor of our mission and guiding principles above, we must act now. There are no fingers to be pointed in this case, only problem solving on our parts. Please share your ideas with your admin team or Teacher Leadership Council members. Points to ponder...
How do we address our students' learning needs?
Does our process need tweaking? Which components need to be reviewed/revised?
How do the interventionists, inclusion teachers, and core teachers share responsibility?
What does shared responsibility look like in our schools? District?
How can you make a difference in the process?
Is what we espouse what we actually do?
One concept that we have been discussing is co-teaching. From cursory talks with teachers, I have learned that it has been an idea that we have had afloat for a while; yet, we lack depth of training in the area. Follow the link below to see a blog posting related to co-teaching as well as other helpful links that give guidance and ideas to help make the transition. The author begins by making sure readers understand that co-teaching is more than a teaching assignment; it is an experience. It takes mutual planning and a strong relationship between the teachers to effectively use this design. In the coming weeks, we will meet with inclusion teachers and interventionists to cotinue the dialogue.

With that, I submit the Log. #stayhungry #eXcellencemarksthespot #committedtoeXcellence cje

Strategic Planning Process Continues
The next strategic planning sessions are scheduled for the first full week of November. The next step is meeting with individual action teams to work on the following:
- Identify appropriate strategies to accomplish each goal.
- Determine quantitative measures of success for each strategy.
- Develop action plans for each strategy that address the required motivation, learning, support, and resources to accomplish the strategy.
The groups will meet as outlined below:
- Goal # 3: Safe and Orderly Environment-Tuesday, November 6th: 8:30-11:00 am @ Central Services Board Room (Board Member: Cecil Lizana)
- Goal #4: Healthy Fund Balance-Tuesday, November 6th: 12:00pm-2:30 pm @ Central Services Board Room (Board Member: Margaret Jean Kalif)
- Goal #1: Partnerships-Wednesday, November 7th: 8:30am-11:00 am @ DES Conference Room (Board Members: Avra O'Dwyer & Scott Naugle)
- Goal #2: Achievement-Wednesday, November 7th: 12:00-2:30 pm @ DES Conference Room (Board Member: Walter 'Skip' King)
During this process, all titles and roles are to be left outside the room; we are all in this together and look forward to seeing how everyone's ideas will come together to define our work over the next five years.
Due to strategic planning, the Principal's Meeting and Key Leadership Meeting originally scheduled for November 7th will now be held on November 14th. Please adjust your calendars accordingly. -- pc
