Boone Bear Facts
December 17, 2015
Winter Holidays are from Monday, December 21st - Monday, January 4th!
Happy, Happy Holidays to You!
Special Recognition: On Monday night, the AISD school board recognized Boone for the 3 state distinctions we earned last year based on our STAAR scores. We earned three: Top 25% Progress, Academic Achievement in Reading/English Language Arts, and Post Secondary Readiness. I am so very proud of our kids and teachers for all of their hard work.
Below you will find some pictures of some of the many activities that occur here at Boone. The worldwide Hour of Code showed all of us, coding is not as hard as it might sound. Our 5th grade honor choir students were performers at the Crockett Winter Wonderland Showcase last Friday night. Of course, they were the best out of all of the schools. The annual Boone Bear Market sponsored by third grade students is always a hit as the kids learn about financial literacy and the difference between goods and services.
Attendance Bingo: Tomorrow morning, we will celebrate the students who have had perfect attendance this 2nd 9 weeks. We played bingo this morning with them. Thank you for all of your support in valuing school and the education your children receive.
Honoring George and Johnnie Boone: The Downtown Lions Club donated $500 to Boone in honor of George who was a long time member of the Lions Club. We will be using this money to help purchase new beds in the nurse's office.
Exclusive Tour: For only Boone families, Covington Middle School will be hosting a schoolwide tour with the principal, Shannon Sellstrom on January 14th from 1:30-2:15. Ms. Lozo and I will also be in attendance. Parents can tour the school and classrooms, ask the principal questions about the programs and see the high quality instruction occurring. Anyone can attend. If you have any questions about the tour, you can call Ms. Lozo at 512-841-5376. A flyer for the event is attached.
New Transfer Policy: AISD has asked that we share the updates to the new transfer policy for the 16-17 school year. We sent home a flyer, sent an email, and have it on our school website for your reference. We did learn that Boone is not one of the schools that are frozen and open for transfers. We have included the link to the AISD website for more information. https://www.austinisd.org/transfer

Safety Drills at Boone
At Boone Elementary, we take safety very seriously and practice drills and procedures every semester. Boone has a fire drill every month in accordance to district requirements. During a fire drill, the school is evacuated and procedures are followed to account for every adult and child. In the fall and spring semester, we also have a Shelter in Place drill to help us understand what we need to do to be safe during bad weather. That practice came in handy this fall with some bad weather we had in October. Two other drills we practice every semester is the Reverse Evacuation drill which regulates movement from building to building and a Lock Down drill. To keep us safe during a lock down drill, the entire school is secured and every member goes to their designated safety spot. As an everyday precaution, we do keep all doors locked between arrival and dismissal. Parents and visitors are required to ring in at the front door. If you have any questions about safety drills and procedures, please contact Amie Chalberg at 512-414-5310 or at amie.chalberg@austinisd.org.
