Dual Enrollment VS AP
Well, first of all, one is not necessarily better than the other, BUT one will be a better fit than the other depending on the student's needs. Below are some guidelines to consider when deciding whether to take the AP route or the dual enrollment route.
*AP is a great fit......
- When your student is considering a private and or an out-of-state college.
- When your student is considering applying to a competitive college such as Vanderbilt or Duke, or an Ivy League school and wants his/her courses taken in high school to be as competitive as possible.
- When your student is pursuing the Advanced Placement Diploma Distinction.
- When your student is ranked in the Top of his/her class and wants to receive as much GPA weight on high school courses taken as possible. (Dual Enrollment courses are not weighted.) *taking an elective college course or two for the experience could still be an option if you are a student that fits one of the descriptions above)
Academic Dual Enrollment is a great fit.......
- When your student is an excellent motivated student who is planning to attend an in-state public college.
- when your student is all of the above and is not the best standardized test taker. The reason is that dual enrollment with any of the three above institutions is available at a reduced tuition cost than when a student take them their in college, and academic scholarships are based on both GPA and standardized test scores. Therefore, if your student is not likely to score high enough to be in academic scholarship territory, dual enrollment could be advantageous from a financial standpoint.
Career Technical Dual Enrollment is a great fit.......(courses are FREE w/grant!)
- When your student makes mostly A's and B's in school and is interested in working toward a certificate or degree in one of the following areas while in high school:
- Automotive Technology
- Carpentry
- Machine Shop
- Medical Technology
- Emergency Medical Care
- Welding
