MARYVILLE CITY SCHOOLS

CALENDAR UPDATE

The addition of Monday to our weekend break at Easter has been very positively received. We hope you too had a wonderful four-day break. We are gathering input from our staff through the Teacher Advisory Council and may recommend to the board to add Easter Monday to the calendar for next year. If you have comments or concerns to share, please email us at MCS@maryville-schools.org.

COVID POSITIVE UPDATE

As of Monday, April 12, we had 6 student cases and 1 staff case that required contact tracing.

MASK GUIDELINES

Based in large part on the decreasing number of active cases and an increasing number of individuals who are now vaccinated, we expect to gradually relax our mask policy in the coming weeks for staff and students.

Effective on Friday, April 16, the district will allow elementary staff members to make the personal choice to wear or discontinue wearing masks. Some employees who have elected to not take the vaccine or have health compromised conditions themselves, in their family, or in their classrooms may certainly continue to wear masks. We fully support the elective wearing of masks, as well as the situational wearing of masks, when close, direct contact cannot be avoided. We strongly encourage all employees to continue with safe practices of engagement.

Finally, we will consistently monitor COVID data and keep our promise to be a responsive district, increasing and decreasing restrictions based on school and community data.

STATE TESTING

As you know, state testing is in full swing at all schools. We appreciate your continued cooperation and support to ensure every student has the best opportunity to perform well on these assessments. Attendance, as always, is paramount during the testing window that runs through May 5th.

STUDENT VERIFICATION AND REGISTRATION

In the next few weeks, we will open the portal for both RETURNING STUDENT VERIFICATION and NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION. As the family of a returning student, you will be notified by email with all the details. This year, rather than using a SNAPCODE to access the verification site, you will simply use your PowerSchool Parent Account. The same will be true in future years too.

The NEW STUDENT REGISTRATION process will also happen in PowerSchool, so those families will create their Parent Portal first, and then go through the registration process.

Review the section below if your child will be in KINDERGARTEN during the 2021-2022 school year.

SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

The Maryville Board of Education convened for the annual budget work session on April 7th. At the meeting, several new initiatives were discussed which we wanted to share. Keep in mind that these programs will need to be funded and ultimately approved by the board, but we feel confident many will be implemented in the new school year.

  • Elementary behavior management support program - to include a certified behavior management specialist, as well as behavioral management teaching assistants.
  • Creation of a new American Sign Language teaching position at MHS.
  • Improve specialized support for students to better serve the emotional and social needs of students - including a new part-time counselor at MHS.
  • Laptops for teachers in grades 8-12 are scheduled for replacement this summer.
  • During the 2022-2023 school year, both intermediate teachers and students in grades 8-12 will receive new laptops.
  • MRIS will receive a much-needed HVAC system upgrade this summer.
  • MJHS is scheduled for a new roof.

The board is committed to offering a salary increase for all personnel and will make those decisions as the FY21-22 budget is finalized.
