For Safety's Sake: Please Update Emergency Contact Info!
Prior to the beginning of each school year, it is imperative that we confirm the demographic and emergency information we have on file for each student.
In order to accomplish this, we will be emailing online update forms to each family.
The online form will present the information that is currently on file and ask for confirmation of each piece of information. The form will also allow for changes and updates as needed. Please watch your email after August 1st for this important information.
If you have any questions or have any difficulty submitting the form, please contact Mrs. DiSilvio at 815-338-4220, x107. Thank you for your cooperation in our efforts to keep our files up to date.
IDEA is now a DUAL CREDIT class in partnership with MCC!
We currently offer our U.S.Government course as dual credit - and this is yet another step towards offering our students more opportunities to prepare and succeed at the next level! (And, it's a great money-saver, as you only pay Marian Central tuition!)
COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY WORKSHOP - August 5th - 8th!
College Application Essay Workshop: Mr. Stamatakos will be facilitating a four-day workshop for members of the Class of 2020 who want to produce an effective, personalized, and compelling personal essay for their college applications. Students will produce a quality essay, ready for submission, at the completion of the workshop. The course consists of an introductory lecture, continuous instruction on strategies and techniques, and daily individual writing conferences with Mr. Stamatakos on each and every draft of the essay - from topic ideas through the finished product.
The workshop will run from Monday, August 5th through Thursday, August 8th. Students will attend the workshop during one of the following time slots. Please note the time change for Time Slot B, which was previously stated to begin at 11:00 a.m.
Time Slot A: 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Time Slot B: 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
Registration can be completed online now at https://forms.gle/FR9by6eSUTUS2ybE6. Please read all instructions before and after registering for the workshop for information about how and when to submit the required registration fee.
Each time slot will be capped at 25 students to ensure that Mr. Stamatakos has an opportunity to conference with each student in each section more than once throughout the week. All registrations will be timestamped, so seats in each section will be filled on a first come-first served basis. Wait lists for each time slot will be established. In the event of an opening, students will be accepted off the wait list based on the date/time that the student submitted registration beginning with the earliest registrants.
Senior College Application Night will be held on Tuesday August 20th 2019 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. This program will outline the logistics of applying to college and will include a brief Common Application tutorial and detailed instructions for using SCOIR throughout the college application process. Though attendance isn’t mandatory, all seniors are strongly encouraged to attend. Parents are encouraged to attend as well. Even though parents may not be new to the college application process, the Class of 2020 will be the first to use SCOIR to process and send all of their college application materials. We want to be sure everyone has the information they need to make college application season smooth and stress free!
Financial Aid Information Night will be held on Tuesday, September 24th 2019 from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. in the Auditorium. This program will provide families with an understanding of how families’ financial need is determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS Profile and how colleges use that information to award need-based financial aid. This year’s presenter will be Susan Teerink, the Associate Vice Provost for Financial Aid and Enrollment Services at Marquette University. This program is open to students and parents from all grade levels, however junior and senior families are strongly encouraged to attend.
Attention NEW SENIORS! (Class of 2020)
ATTENTION 19-20 SCIENCE COURSE STUDENTS: Changes Made to Book List!
1. Biology 1-H
Book: 9780078664274 BSCS Biology: A Molecular Approach
The book we have been using for this course is NO LONGER IN PRINT with no readily available replacement (ie - a newer edition of the same book) You may notice that used books ARE AVAILABLE through MBS through their "Marketplace" - but no new books are being printed. You can also find this book on Amazon, from various sellers, in various conditions.
SOLUTION: We found a completely FREE ONLINE VERSION of this book (with which users can skip directly to the page needed, etc. - so it's not a pdf!) So if your student is comfortable with going digital on their science book - this could be an excellent (and FREE) alternative!
We are hoping that, through MBS Marketplace, Amazon, books still shared/sold between families, and this free online version - we will be able to have a successful school year without the added expense (and last-minute scramble) to switching out to an entirely new textbook! (But - be advised we will most likely have to change out for the 2020-2021 school year!)
2. Physics
Book: 9781937492137: Essential Physics
The publisher (PASCO) does not sell to any 3rd party distributors (MBS) so MBS can't offer this book through our online bookstore.
SOLUTION: PASCO (the book's publisher) is READY TO ASSIST ALL FAMILIES WHO WISH TO ORDER THIS BOOK:
Parents can call Pasco Customer Service at 877-373-0300 and rder the downloadable eBook Code # EP-6323-EB1 for a 1-year access costing $10. There is a hardcover available for $65 that you may also purchase, but the downloadable book is all the student would need. MAKE SURE YOU WAIT UNTIL YOU HAVE YOUR SCHOOL DEVICE IN THE FALL BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD THIS BOOK! (so you don't have to pay for multiple downloads!)
We apologize for the inconvenience - but, hopefully the $10 cost is more than worth the extra step of ordering through the publisher for this book!
3. Physics C (both)
Book: 9th edition Physics for Scientists & Engineers, AP Edition. ISBN 9781133953951
9th edition is now out of print.
SOLUTION: 10th edition is practically identical so we've made this change through MBS. The NEW ISBN for the 10th edition is 9781337553292. If you have already purchased the 9th edition (through Amazon or some other book seller), that's OK. If you haven't yet made your purchase, please select the 10th edition that is linked on MBS. The instructor for this course, Mrs. Dwyer, is aware of the edition change, and will work with both editions!
2019-2020 MC BOOK LIST! (complete with above updates!)
As we communicated in the previous newsletter, sometimes we have to make last-minute changes to the book list as publishers announce when books are out-of-print. We try to work with one textbook for as long as possible (either until they are no longer in print, or the content becomes irrelevant) to reduce costs to our families. As you can see from the above announcements about three of our science textbooks - those changes often happen during the early summer months (sometimes after the instructors have left for break!) Science seems to be the content area that frequent change is expected - which is why so many new editions are only available in digital content format! We strive to offer multiple formats to meet the learning needs of our students, and will always try to find print versions as an option.
Last year was the FINAL year we offered the book buy-back program here at MC, so please plan accordingly as you make your purchases.
Here are a few tips:
- Always check the ISBN of the book to make sure you have the correct edition!
- If purchasing digital downloads (eBooks, etc.) - wait until the fall when your student has the actual device in hand before you make those digital purchases, as most of them are one-time-only downloads.
- We try to use the same textbook for at least FIVE years so you can take advantage of hand-me-downs among friends and family, but in some instances, we have no choice but to update to a newer edition.
- MBS is our official ONLINE BOOKSTORE, which will open on July 1st.
- From July 8 - 14, 2019 - MBS is offering FREE SHIPPING for orders over $99.
- A portion of all MBS sales is donated back to Marian's tuition assistance program
- Books available through MBS are guaranteed to be in stock, with guaranteed buy-back
- If choosing to purchase books through Amazon, please consider using Amazon Smile, and selecting Marian Central as the beneficiary. Just another way to help fund our tuition assistance program!
- There are several classes that have collected donated textbooks next week (English, for example) as we work to keep costs down for our families by gathering class-sets to use! We will provide a tax donation receipt for certain books- so please consider donating books if you have no plans to resell them or pass them on to another family! It's not too late to help other MC families with your donated textbooks!
ALL STUDENTS: INFO about YOUR FILES and MARIAN ACCOUNTS
SENIORS - Please save any work from your Marian accounts to your own personal accounts before you turn in your computers. All Senior Google and 0365 accounts will be shut down by June 15th.
FRESHMEN, SOPHOMORES, and JUNIORS - Reminder - all devices will be re imaged and anything saved on your device will be deleted. Make sure you are saving any work to your One Drive or Google Drive accounts.
Your Voice MATTERS!
In an effort to reevaluate our strategic plan for the upcoming years, we are pushing out two different types of surveys to all staff, students, and parents. AdvancED, the school accreditation agency that partners with Marian on continuous improvement, will also visit Marian Central on occasion in order to re-evaluate our school's progress. The results from these surveys will help identify what Marian is doing well and what we can consider when building our future plans.
Moving forward, these surveys will become our baseline, as we will be periodically repeating these surveys in order to have comparative data.
Please click the links below and complete the surveys at your earliest convenience.
