First Years
Build week for our launching apparatuses starts next week!
Learners need to make sure that they have the appropriate dress for being in the Fab Lab. Closed-toed shoes like sneakers and boots are required. No slippers or flimsy shoes will be allowed. Safety gear for eyes is required. Pants are recommended. If noise is an issue for the leaner earplugs are a great idea. Work gloves are also recommended for dealing with rough wood.
Learners without the appropriate and required gear will not be allowed in the Fab Lab.
The build schedule is as follows:
Monday- Cohort 1
Tuesday- Cohort 4
Wednesday- Cohort 2
Thursday- Cohort 5
Friday- Cohort 3
The facilitators are excited to see what the learners have designed and their final build!

Second Years
After an incredibly busy week, Beneath the Surface is a wrap! The Second Years converged on Harry Rowlinson Community Natatorium this week to put their submersibles to the test. Learners pit their PVC submersibles that they spent weeks creating against the other alliances to score points by retrieving pieces of the “satellite” at the bottom of the pool. The results were as follows:
First Place - Middle East and Africa
Second Place - Americas
Third Place - Europe
Fourth Place - Asia
Fifth Place - Southeast Asia and Oceania
The final General Assembly took place on Friday, as Learners wrapped up the Second Academy Model United Nations. For the final time this year, learners acted as delegates and represented their country while debating global issues and solutions. Debate has been inspired and passionate, and generally informed. The Second Year Team is proud of the learners for rising to the challenges presented to them in Beneath the Surface!
Change the Game is up next, which will ask the learners to work together and fill roles to create a digital video game. We will launch with a trip to the National Video Game Museum, where learners will have a chance to take a close look at the evolution of video games, and hopefully get some inspiration for their presentation booths where they will showcase the games they create at the end of the project.
Third Years
To the 3rd Year Parents,
In this last week before Thanksgiving break the learners are focused on their K'Ching booth layout by mapping out their physical spaces, bringing their original Maquete designs closer to a final product. Major production of their products has mostly wrapped up, with only a few groups working in the Chem and Fab Lab. When we return from the break, we will begin the final phase of Booth construction.
Thank you,
Your 3rd Year facilitators
Fourth Years
On Friday, the 4th Year learners presented how they used the Toyota Business Plan (TBP) and project management to arrive at countermeasures/solutions for their department.
Their presentations were polished, professional, and the learners did an amazing job!
We are so thankful for the time, effort, and support of our Toyota mentors.
To all 3rd year parents:
An exciting tradition continues on Wednesday, December 18th, 9:30-10:30am with our Class of 2021 Commitment Ceremony! (Formerly Ring Ceremony)
This is an opportunity to let your child know how proud you are of how far they have come in their education along with wishing them well in the next chapter of young adult lives. A continental breakfast will be provided by our PTSA and you will have a chance to present your son or daughter with their Jostens class ring, (delivered that day) or other small gift (i.e: a family heirloom piece of jewelry, flowers, etc.). You do not need to bring a gift to attend. We will share the inspirational message you provide on your RSVP on PowerPoint as well as on a commemorative card. Even if you cannot attend please fill out the RSVP with message. Dress is business professional attire. This event is for parents and their learners. if you are not able to attend, you may send a family member in your place. Please contact Robin Fletcher if you have questions, robin.fletcher@pisd.edu.
Please RSVP by December 10th here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1F-l3iJjyosM_fxR2epro-vGvMg_RJShzUtaRpQdbaYY/edit

Attention Parents!
Are you a parent of a graduating senior? A surprise recognition ad will make your graduate’s last high school yearbook extra special for them. The process is quite simple. All you need are a few digital photos and a short, personal message. You can build your own ad or an Academy Yearbook sponsor can assist. To reserve space in the book, you’ll need to place the order and create your ad by January 31. Recognition ads are in addition to the purchase of a yearbook.
Direct all questions to me, Linda Aponte, Academy Yearbook Sponsor at linda.aponte@pisd.edu. Or you can order online by visiting the following Jostens link and clicking on recognition ads. tinyurl.com/2019AcademyYearbook
