Breann's Railroad Transportation
use your brain, take the train
History
The development of RAILROADS was one of the most important phenomena of the Industrial Revolution. With their formation, construction and operation, they brought profound social, economic and political change to a country only 50 years old.Railroad history in the United States is nearly as old as the country itself, dating back to the mid-1820s. As we know this great nation of ours would not have grown and prospered as it did without the railroads. The earliest railroads constructed were horse drawn cars running on tracks, used for transporting freight.
Advantages of Railroad Transportation
- Large amounts of people are able to be transported easily
- It is an efficient way to travel long distance
- It is able to move bulky goods which are not easily transported otherwise
- There is no need to worry about traffic
A Few Disadvantages
- Railroads/trains are not always clean
- Inflexibility: train routes and timings cannot be adjusted to individual requirements.
- Railway transportation is unsuitable and uneconomical for short distances
Inventor
The railroad was first developed in Great Britain. A man named GEORGE STEPHENSON successfully applied the steam technology of the day and created the world's first successful locomotive. The first engines used in the United States were purchased from the STEPHENSON WORKS in England. Even rails were largely imported from England until the Civil War.
