Message from Mr. Agius

Harlan Families,

I hope that you all had a wonderful week and were able to enjoy some of the sunshine. Luckily, our kids were able to enjoy some outdoor recess. Please continue to send your kids in with their boots. While we do close down sections of our playground that are muddy, kids being kids, they always manage to find a muddy area. A change of shoes or boots will help to keep their favorite shoes nice and clean.

Last Saturday, many of our 4th and 5th graders participated in Battle of the Books. This year, one of Harlan’s very own teams, Dragon Readers, took 1st Place! The Dragon Readers team consists of Jack Bobel, Nathan Haffey, Dylan Kurzawa, Noah Oh, Camron Sadeghi, and Adam Sesi! Great job Dragon Readers and all 4th and 5th graders who participated in the Battle of the Books! Keep on reading!

Last night, during BPS Stars of Tomorrow, 1st grader, Kendall Kadro, also made Harlan proud with her amazing ice skating performance. If you were not able to tune in, please check out this link, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AnrAy8kAxuE to see all of the wonderful performances. Kendall’s performance begins at the 53:49 mark. Great job, Kendall!

I hope to see all of you at this evening’s Masked Reader event on Zoom. Our kids have been watching all of the Masked Reader videos and trying to guess who is who! Join the Zoom tonight (link below) to see who is behind each mask and for many other fun surprises!

Enjoy the weekend!

Sincerely,

Alex

World Down Syndrome Day - March 21st

Every year, on March 21st, people all around the world come together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day by wearing brightly colored, mismatched socks. Together everyone can create a single global voice advocating for the rights, inclusion, and well-being of people with Down Syndrome in our community and around the world. March 21 (3-21) is symbolic because people with Down Syndrome have 3 copies of their 21st chromosome. Socks were chosen because the karyotype of DS chromosomes actually looks like mismatched socks!

Are you looking for flexible work hours while your kids are at school? Chartwells is now hiring! If you are interested, please click here to find out more information.

School Lunches (repeat)

In case there is confusion on how the free lunch works this school year, here is the breakdown of what it includes and when a charge is made to a student account:

One complete lunch includes milk, entrée, and fruit/vegetable. There is no charge as long as all of those items are taken.

If a student has a second entrée, the student’s account will be charged $1.50. If a students want an individual serving of only one item, here is the breakdown of charges for it:

Milk - $0.50

Fruit - $0.50

Vegetables - $0.50

Juice - $0.50

Water - $0.50

Allergy Alert (repeat)

BPS takes all food allergies seriously, however, with the nationwide food supply chain issues it is not guaranteed that the menu items listed will be served that day. Unfortunately this means that fast changes does not allow for Chartwells to change to food items that may or may not contain allergens including peanuts and tree nuts. If you have any questions, please contact Pattie Guck at pguck@birmingham.k12.mi.us.
