Mrs. Laub's Second Grade News
Classroom Information and Reminders
Our Week In Review
Our reading time was spent identifying character traits through character dialogue, thoughts, and actions in the story.
Students took their first spelling test of second grade on Wednesday. Each student was responsible for identifying the long or short a sound in a given word. Next Wednesday, September 16th, students will be responsible for spelling 5 words plus a bonus word. I will choose words from the following list: glass, bat, fast, hand, mad, snap, last, grass, ask, sack, whale, gate, make, page, came, face, base, rake, same, made, & what.
Our math time was dedicated to differentiating between equations, equation chains, and vertical form so that students can comfortably solve math problems involving the same parts and totals in different forms.
During science we welcomed our new (temporary) classmates, the caterpillars, as we began to observe the butterfly life cycle unfold in our own classroom. With your permission, students can visit this free website for life cycle enrichment activities:

Show Your Spirit!
Thank you to the two families who supplied extra earbuds for our class. Your donation is appreciated and our students will put the earbuds to good use since we began using our 5 classroom tablets on Wednesday!
Please send in your Box Tops for Education in a bag or envelope marked with your child's name and my name. Your donation benefits Sweeny students and every Box Top adds up in a big way!
Our Sweeny PTO is pretty terrific! If you have not joined PTO, it's not too late. Let me know if you need a registration form and I'll gladly get one to you. PTO participation is helpful to Sweeny students and teachers, and is a great way to emphasize the importance of education in your child's life!
For those wondering about sending birthday treats, there are 25 students in our class. Please refrain from sending treats containing peanuts or tree nuts to protect those with allergies.
Please make it a goal for your student to be able to tie his or her shoes if your child wears shoes with strings. There are several tutorials available on youtube that show and tell children how to accomplish this goal quickly.
