Oct. 28, 2022
Our last full week of October has ended, and the crazy season of holidays begins on Monday! Students will participate in parties during the end of the school day on Monday. Then, just three weeks later, they'll have another short week for Thanksgiving....followed by the excitement of Christmas and other winter holidays.
If you celebrate a holiday in December that is not Christmas, please be sure to let your child's teacher know. We want to be inclusive of all of the holidays that are important to your children. Thanks in advance for your help! Have a wonderful weekend!

Fall Parties
- Monday, Oct. 31 from 1:00-2:00
- Teachers have sent out communication regarding fall parties.
- Students should come to school with their costumes in a bag; please do not send them to school in costumes (it makes for a difficult day until 1:00).
- Please remember- no masks that obstruct vision, no face paint, and no overtly scary costumes.
- We are a no food school- please don't send any food in for parties (even to take home).
- Parents who have made arrangements to assist may park in the regular lot or the bus lot at LIS.
Parent-Teacher Conferences
- Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled from 11-7 on November 8th. The students will have an e-learning day with two half-hour chunks of time set aside for 'office hours'. This way, students can reach out to teachers with questions or difficulties.
- This year, we will schedule conferences using Sign Up Genius. Teachers sent these links already. If you missed it, please reach out to get your conference scheduled.
- Conferences may be scheduled virtually, by phone, or in person. While we know that families are so busy, we would love to have the opportunity to touch base with all of our families, so I encourage you to sign up for a time.
Calling All Veterans!
Veterans Day RSVPs went out earlier this week. If you plan to attend, please let us know by returning that. Part of our program will be honoring veteran family members of our Liberty students. To help us facilitate this, we are requesting that you send a photo of a past or present veteran so that we may include it in our presentation. Please email photos to our Music teacher, Mrs. Smith. Thank you in advance for your help!
While we understand that many families would like to attend the Veterans Day program, our primary audience is veterans. There will be seating for all veterans attending but will otherwise be limited. This event will be live streamed on our PTO Facebook page!

Staff Spotlight: Miss Duda
Ms. Duda is one of Liberty's Reading Specialists. She grew up in Chesterton and attended Duneland Schools K-12. She graduated from Chesterton High School and participated in Trojan Guard, gymnastics, and tennis. She loves calling Chesterton home!
Ms. Duda has one daughter who also attends Liberty Elementary. In her spare time she likes to go shopping (always using a coupon!) follow her favorite sports teams (Chicago Cubs / Columbus Blue Jackets) and spend time with her family and friends.
Her favorite food is anything she doesn’t have to cook at home herself; but some favorites are Chipotle, Tao Chen’s, Popeyes, Jets Pizza, and ice cream! She also loves Diet Dr. Pepper and McDonald’s Diet Coke.
Her favorite color is purple, her favorite poem is ‘Wild Geese’ by Mary Oliver, and she loves ALL music. She enjoys working with Liberty students to become more empowered, inspired readers and leaders.
Lost & Found
We will donate items from our lost and found at the end of the quarter. If you are noticing that your child is missing a hoodie, it's probably here! Tell your child to go to Lost and Found by the Art Room to find their missing clothing.
Information from previous newsletters
Winter Card Contest
The Duneland School Corporation will again host a Winter Card Contest for Duneland School students in grades K-8. Contest submissions are due on Friday, November 11. Winners from each grade level will be notified and invited to the Dec. 5 school board meeting to be recognized and awarded. Eligibility and rules for the contest are listed under district announcements on the Duneland website and are posted in the district’s newsletter DuneNews. All submissions are due to their respective school’s main office on or before the end of the school day on Nov. 11.
E-Learning Updates
Unexpected/ Unplanned E-Learning Days
Pre-planned E-Learning Days
We currently have two days on our school calendar in which students are scheduled to have an e-learning day: November 8 & May 3. Teachers will have blocks of time available for 'office hours', where they will be available to students for questions, but the majority of this day the students will be completing Canvas activities on their own. Teachers generally have professional development scheduled on these days, so they are not available all day long. This method of instruction is referred to as asynchronous. I have linked the guidelines and differences between the two of these days below.
DuneNews
The goal of the Duneland School Corporation district school newsletters is to inform students, parents and the school community about school-related information.
This year, the Duneland Schools will share information that pertains to opportunities our students may be interested in outside of school on a special page on our website. These available opportunities are offered by not-for-profit partnerships and organizations within our school district boundaries and local communities. Follow this link to Community Opportunities.
