Summer Opportunities
2020
Involvement in meaningful summer opportunities serves as a great resume builder for middle and high school students. The listing below is a sampling of the many programs available to students. Summer employment and/or volunteerism are also good avenues to begin gaining career related experience. Students looking to be connected to summer opportunities are invited to meet with their guidance counselor to explore their options. Note: the timeline for the distribution of summer program information varies, therefore, information will be updated on this newsletter as it becomes available.
Local Programs
Girls Who Code
- Free 7 week introductory computer science program for girls entering 11th or 12th grade.

- This program will be held at various NJ locations including but not limited to: Newark, Hoboken, Jersey City.
New Jersey State Police- Trooper Youth Week 2020
- Trooper Youth Week is a residential youth education program developed by the New Jersey State Police. This program presents simulated law enforcement programs for male and female students who have completed their junior year and are entering their senior year of High School.
- Program Dates:
Week #1: July 27-30, 2020
Week #2: August 11-14, 2020

Roselle Park Police Department-- Youth Academy
- July 27-30, 8:30am-3pm.
- Open to middle school students.
- Applications and information are available in the RPMS main office.
Trinitas Nursing Program
- One week summer program for high school students.
- Introduces students to careers in healthcare.
- Open to rising 11th and 12th graders.
- Apply here.
- Application deadline: May 1st.
Union County Sheriff's Department- Youth Academy
- This is a FREE program that is designed to provide the youth in our communities the opportunity to gain insight into the everyday functions and training of the variety of law enforcement agencies and emergency services in our government.
- 1 week program in July 2020.
- Open to students in grades 7-12.
- Application required.
- Application deadline: May 29, 2020

College Exposure
Camp College
- July 27-29
- Open to rising juniors and seniors, Camp College is a free overnight (2 nights) program held at Caldwell College.
- The program will focus on the college search and application process.
- Application information will be posted in daily announcements and updated in this newsletter when it becomes available.
Hispanic Student College Institute at Montclair State University
- Montclair State University, the largest four-year Hispanic Serving Institution in New Jersey, is offering a Hispanic Student College Institute on July 14-16, 2020, for rising high school juniors and seniors.
- Academically committed students who identify as Hispanic are encouraged to apply by visiting montclair.edu/admissions/hsci and completing the online application.
NYU CALI
- The annual New York University College Access Leadership Institute (NYU CALI) is designed for rising high school juniors and seniors to demystify the often daunting college admissions process.
- There is no cost to attend the NYU CALI program.
- Additional information including application procedures can be found here.
- Application deadline: April 15th
Princeton AI4ALL
- 3 week residential program held at Princeton University.
- The focus of the program is artificial intelligence.
- Open to rising 11th graders.
- Application deadline: March 10
- Financial aid is available to help offset tuition (up to 100%).

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute PREFACE Program
- June 28- July 11th.
- Open to rising juniors and seniors from underrepresented backgrounds with an interest in engineering or technology related careers.
- PREFACE is a two week residential experience at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Rochester, NY.
- Financial aid is available to students from families making less than $40,000 per year.
- Application deadline: March 27, 2020
Pre-College Programs
Kean University: Pre-College and Summer Youth Programs
- A variety of programs are offered to students including but not limited to: summer science research institute, design program, actors studio and much more.

NJIT: Pre-College Programs
- Programs provide students with exposure to STEM related curriculum and careers.
- Open to students in grades 4-12.

Rutgers University: Pre-College Programs
- Rutgers University offers a variety of pre-college programs during the school year and in the summer months.

UCC College for Teens
- Union county college offers various pre-college programs for teenagers.

US Naval Academy: Summer Seminar (rising 12th graders)
- Deadline: March 31st
- Additional information can be found here.
- This program is highly recommended to students who plan to apply to the USNA.
- Description: Summer Seminar will introduce you to life at the Academy, where you will experience first-class academic, athletic, and professional training at the #1 public college in the U.S.* (Top 25 Public College in the U.S. 2017, Forbes). Your Summer Seminar application will also serve as a preliminary application to the Academy that you will complete before or during your senior year.
US Naval Academy: Summer STEM (Rising 9-11th graders)
- Deadline: April 15th

- Description: Thinking of a career as a coder, game developer, designer, or robotics engineer? Then start with the experience of a world-class program like the Naval Academy’s Summer STEM Program. STEM is all about exploring, creating, building, and making things better, and at our Summer STEM Program, you’ll do just that. You’ll work with students from all over the country as you test your problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration skills.
