The Jefferson Journal February 14
Thomas Jefferson was Nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School
Thomas Jefferson Elementary is one of eight Wisconsin schools to be nominated as a National Blue Ribbon School.
The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction recognized the school for academic excellence and making strides toward closing achievement gaps.
The seven other public schools nominated for Wisconsin are:
• Maple Dale Elementary School, Maple Dale-Indian Hill School District
• Lake Delton Elementary School, School District of Wisconsin Dells
• Altoona Intermediate School, School District of Altoona
• Nicolet Elementary School, Menasha Joint School District
• Lake Superior Elementary School, School District of Superior
• Red Apple Elementary School, Racine Unified School District
• Luther Elementary School, South Milwaukee School District
“We are nominating these eight schools for the National Blue Ribbon School award because they serve as great examples of our progression toward improving student outcomes across the state,” State Superintendent Carolyn Stanford Taylor said. “I wish these schools and their respective communities well in the next steps of this prestigious national program.”
Next, schools must complete the National Blue Ribbon Schools application and undergo a review. The national award winners will be announced in September 2020.

ENCORE updates
K-1-2 are using pattern while 3-4-5 are using balance, contrast, and emphasis.
K-1 students are working on projects creating texture and form by materials such as clay, noodles, packing peanuts, and paper. The texture is how things feel while the form is artwork that takes up space and must be viewed from all sides; it is 3D. The students are loving the 3D (3 dimensions: width, height, depth) sculptures and playing with new materials!
2-3 students are working on projects exploring the use of value and space. Value is the lightness or darkness of a color while space is the distance or area within an artwork that gives the illusion you could jump into the work and walk around. Students are learning how to create the illusion of space via overlapping, where objects are placed on the paper and scale or size of the object. The variation of color (value) is being used to show dimension in their drawings and help them interpret the world around them and make it look more real. The next unit for these students is focusing on form and texture while creating clay sculptures and masks!
4-5 students are working on adding value to their work to create more detail and engage the viewer while keeping texture and form part of the design too. 5th grade is in the middle of their sculpture unit creating forms in materials such as clay, paper mache, cardboard, wire, tinfoil, and airdry clay. Adding texture to their sculptures helps add interest to their work while communicating more about their idea within the form. The final stages will be adding titles to their work, color, and value. 4th grade is working on creating a relief print (printing the high areas on a printing plate while denting in their drawing so it is shown with the void of color) mandala. Students are learning how to use new art-making material and process, while problem-solving and find ways to succeed in making a personal mandala. Did you know mandals are traditionally round and show images or symbols of the topic they address? In this case, the students created their mandala to tell via images or symbols about themselves all while keeping the design round (radial symmetry). Next up for 4th grade is adding physical texture to their forms by making a clay project.

Raptor Visitor Management System
The Raptor Visitor Management System has been up and running since January 2, 2020. The new process has been going very smoothly.
The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. The Raptor Visitor Management System and process will help us ensure that people who may present a danger are kept away from our students and staff.
Upon entering a District school, visitors will be asked to present a valid state-issued ID, which will be checked against a national sex offender database to ensure that registered sex offenders are not entering our buildings. The Raptor system only checks the visitor's name and date of birth for comparison with a national database of registered sex offenders. No other data from the ID is gathered or recorded. The system is not connected to any other database and information is not shared with any outside agency.
Once the visitor’s entry is approved, a badge will be issued that identifies the name of the visitor, the date and time, and the purpose of the visit. Children who do not have a valid ID may be allowed to visit as long as they are accompanied by an adult who has completed the check-in process and has been issued a badge. Regular volunteers and all contractors or subcontractors will be subject to the same procedure as visitors at all times. If the visitor’s identity cannot be verified through an acceptable form of identification, the visitor will not be allowed to proceed past the office area. The Raptor system does not replace our current volunteer process.
A visitor’s badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools to simply pick up or drop off an item in the office. A badge is also not necessary for those who are picking up their child from the office as long as they are not going into the school building.
The Raptor Visitor Management System and process will only be used during school hours. Attendees at after-hours events such as performances, ceremonies, or academic/athletic competitions will not be required to complete the process.
Thank you, in advance, for supporting our strengthened safety and security protocols in the Wausau School District.
Sincerely,
Angela Lloyd, Director of Pupil Services
Cover Your Cough
Why should I cover my cough?
“Colds” and serious respiratory illnesses like influenza (“the flu”) and whooping cough are spread by:
-Coughing and sneezing
-Unclean hands
These illnesses spread easily in crowded places where people are in close contact, like SCHOOLS!
When you cough or sneeze, it’s best to cover your mouth and nose so the germs aren’t sprayed into the room for other people to breathe. Everyone used to cover with their hands, but then, if hands weren’t washed right away, the germs got passed from hands to other people and still made them sick.
How do I stop the spread of germs?
Cough or sneeze into your elbow!
Hold your arm up even with your shoulder, then bring your hand in toward your chest. Bring your elbow up to your mouth and nose, and cough or sneeze.
It’s true, germs can land on your elbow, too, but you don’t use your elbow to hold food, pencils or toys, and you don’t use it to touch other people as you do with your hands.
How else can I stay healthy?
Clean your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Don’t share eating utensils, drinking glasses, or other personal items.
Get your flu shot.
