PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Waverley Families,
I hope that you are doing well and pleased with Waverley’s virtual learning program. Our teachers thank you for your support and encouragement through these challenging times. We have all done a great job working together for the success of all students. During the holidays I also hope that each family finds time to step away from the Chromebook to do something special as a family. We all deserve a break…we have earned it! Please stay safe and well during the holidays and see you again in 2021!
Dr. Watkins-Principal

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN ART?
In Art students in PreK have been working on cutting skills while making crafts. The K/1st grade have been learning about lines and primary and secondary colors. Our 2nd/3rd graders enjoyed making llama portraits which focused on neutral colors for the llama and a colorful background to mimic Peruvian textiles. The 4th/5th grade have been creating artwork showing positive and negative space which requires intricate cutting.
MUSIC NEWS
In Music, the students have been learning about Pitch in music - high and low sounds, and how notes are written on the music staff to show pitch. Students have discussed singing and singers with their music teachers. In December, students are singing winter songs and learning about music from a number of different holidays. Mrs. Berry and Ms. Smith THANK the students for watching Music class each week, and then going to their Music Schoology page to do the short quiz. This shows the music teachers that the students are listening and learning.
MEDIA MESSAGES
During library time, students are encouraged to start putting books on hold for curbside pick up. Starting on Monday December 14th, students can start putting books on hold to have with them during the winter break. Books will need to be returned the first week of January. Kindergarten students who are meeting with their teachers for face to face instruction will be able to pick books out of the library on Mondays with their small groups and teachers.
REMINDER ABOUT I-READY!
I-Ready is an online math program that will help your student’s teacher determine your student’s needs, personalize their learning, and monitor progress throughout the school year.
Your child's teacher has taught your child how to access i-Ready. Your child's teacher has taught one of the following ways:
- clicking on i-ready or clever icon in their virtual classroom
- clicking on Clever Portal in the FCPS Bookmarks
- link in child's schedule
*If you or your child needs help with accessing i-Ready, please ask your teacher for help.
How you can help at home:
- K-2nd: complete i-Ready 4 times a week for 30 minutes (one lesson then play the games)
- 3rd - 5th: complete i-Ready a minimum of 4 times a week for 30 minutes (one lesson then play games) - they are welcome to work on i-Ready more often.
- remind your child to complete their i-Ready lesson for the day
- Please have your child complete their lesson independently. The program is based on how your child completes their lessons. If you have helping your child, then he/she will receive harder questions. It is ok if your child makes a mistake or fails a lesson. Their teacher is monitoring their progress and will support your child when they need it.
We are having a contest to see which class can do the most minutes in December. There will be a winner from K - 2 and a winner from 3rd - 5th. The class will get to vote on their prize. Remind your child to do i-Ready so they can win the prize.
If you have any questions about i-Ready, please ask your child's teacher.
Here is a video you can watch for some more information.
