Exciting News
We now have a subscription to IXL maths. Each student has been given a username and password by their teacher and can log on at http://ixl.com
IXL maths is a great way for students to review concepts taught earlier in the year and to practise concepts currently being taught in class. Your child's teacher will assign units for your child to do, rather than students picking units at random.
Upcoming events
The International Family Food Fair takes place on February 28th. This is one of the highlights of the ISL Qatar calendar and is an opportunity for families to come together to celebrate our school community whilst raising money for the charities the school supports.
Volunteers are needed and there is a sign up sheet outside each classroom.
As part of our unit of inquiry, there will be a field trip to Purple Island. Mr Hodgkinson, Secondary Biology teacher, will accompany us. Permission slips will be sent home after the break.
Unit of inquiry.
This week we have been inquiring into interdependence or organisms within an ecosystem. Students read The Lorax by Dr Suess and looked at how living things were connected to each other. They drew diagrams to show the different relationships. They were then given cards with an animal or plant on it and given some time to find out where it lives and its position in the food chain. They shared this information with the class and then used rope to show how things were connected within an ecosystem.
Ms Mills (Teacher-Librarian) has been working with each class, continuing the development of students' research skills.
Farewell
Today we had to say farewell to Virag Szabo. Virag and her family are moving back to Hungary. She has made a great contribution to the school in her time here. We wish her good luck in her new school.
Visit to the Museum of Islamic Art
This week each class visited the Museum of Islamic Art and took part in a workshop Science in Art. Students learned about the different types of Islamic art such as calligraphy and manuscripts. They learned more about the development of the astrolabe and how science, maths, art and design were all incorporated in this navigational tool. They then had the opportunity to create their own designs for an astrolabe. Some of the designs are on display in the Grade 5 corridor.
