HES Shark Scoop
November 4, 2022
From Principal Cutone
Dear Harwich Elementary School Families,
Welcome to November! What a beautiful week it has been at HES, and it looks like a gorgeous weekend. Thank you for all that you are doing at home to send us well-rested, ready-to-learn Sharks. Your partnership is so important and always appreciated.
As a reminder, I am currently in the process of putting together Harwich Elementary's School Council. I am looking for 1-2 more parents or caregivers to fill our parent positions on this important council, which would necessitate a one year commitment of 4 meetings throughout the remainder of the year. The purpose is to bring together community members, teachers and parents to help advise the principal on school related matters pertaining to the School Improvement Plan and budgetary decisions. I want to thank the PTO for gathering interest; submit your name and a brief statement of interest to our PTO president, Crystal Tanguay @ Crystalhespto@gmail.com.
Our first meeting is on Monday, November 14, 2:45 - 3:45pm in the Professional Library at HES. Future meetings will be held at 2:45pm on January 30, March 13, and May 8. Thank you for considering this important work. Have a great weekend!
My best,
Christie

Queridas famílias da escola primária de Harwich,
bem-vindos a novembro!
Meu melhor,
Christie
Health Room Updates
Hello Shark Families!
Now that we are back to “normal”, those illnesses that we weren’t seeing during Covid have surfaced again! I just wanted to let you know that there are currently several things going around the school…..
Hand/foot/mouth disease:
HFM is very contagious however it is generally mild. It usually starts with a fever, then several days later kids can develop a rash (usually on their hands, feet and/or mouth, hence the name. You can find more information here: https://www.cdc.gov/hand-foot-mouth/index.html
RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus):
We have started seeing some cases of RSV in our school as well as in our community. Here is information from the CDC https://www.cdc.gov/rsv/index.html.
Head Lice:
We have already seen cases of head lice this year. Here is the link to Monomoy’s policy on headlice https://www.monomoy.edu/Page/3184 as well as a link to the CDC https://www.cdc.gov/parasites/lice/head/schools.html. Please let me know if you have any questions. It is good practice to check your student regularly, and no sharing of hats or coats.
Just as a reminder, the following guidelines are recommended for determining whether or not to keep a child at home:
A child who has been vomiting or has had diarrhea should be kept at home for at least 24 hours after symptoms have ceased. If your child has consistent pain, fever, and poor oral intake, they should be seen by your physician.
Any child with a fever of 100.04 or above should remain at home until 24 hours after the fever has ended and the child's temperature has returned to normal.
If cold and cough symptoms are persistent and associated with a fever, a physician should see the child.
If the white part of your child's eye is red and the eye has a yellow or green discharge, your child may have conjunctivitis, and your physician should be contacted. The child may return to school after 24 hours of treatment.
If your child has either strep throat or impetigo, he/she must have received 24 hours of medication before returning to school.
Head lice requires treatment for live lice.
I know in years past we have distributed cough drops, however we do not have a physician’s order to do so until students are in 5th grade. As cough drops are considered an Over the Counter medication, we can only administer them with an order from their physician.
Polished Dental: We had Polished Dental come and clean and screen our students who had signed up. We had SO MANY students sign up they were not able to get to everyone! We have scheduled them to come back December 2, so anyone who didn’t get screened will be taken care of at that time.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at hstamp@monomoy.edu at any time if you have questions!! I’ll do the best I can to get back to you promptly.
Thanks and STAY WELL!!!!
Heather Stamp, School Nurse

piolhos:
Obrigado e FIQUE BEM!!!!

Jingle Dancer by Cynthia Leitich Smith
The cone-shaped jingles sewn to Grandma Wolfe's dress sing tink, tink, tink, tink...
Jenna loves the tradition of jingle dancing that has been shared over generations in her family and intertribal community. She hopes to dance at the next powwow.
But with the day quickly approaching, she has a problem-how will her dress sing if it has no jingles?

We are Grateful by Traci Sorell
The Cherokee community is grateful for blessings and challenges that each season brings. This is modern Native American life as told by an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation. The word otsaliheliga (oh-jah-LEE-hay-lee-gah) is used by members of the Cherokee Nation to express gratitude. Beginning in the fall with the new year and ending in summer, follow a full Cherokee year of celebrations and experiences. Written by a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, this look at one group of Native Americans is appended with a glossary and the complete Cherokee syllabary, originally created by Sequoyah.

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Advisory Council
Monomoy is launching a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging Advisory Council, which will advise the Superintendent and the School Committee, resulting in thoughtful actions that respond to the needs of all students, families, and staff. The goal is to create a school district in which all students feel like they belong, all students are successful, and demographics are no longer an indicator of success.
