Monarch and Bluestem Nominees
At Elementary North, we encourage our students to read the Monarch and Bluestem Children's Choice Book Award Nominees! These books can be checked out from our school library or from Cook Memorial Public Library. The Monarch and Bluestem nominees are chosen by AISLE (Association of Illinois School Library Educators). The winner is selected based on statewide student voting. Students all over Illinois will be reading this year's nominated books and voting for a winner in March!
Library Website
Visit our library website! You will find links for free online reading resources, as well as links for kid-friendly search engines such as Kiddle and Kidrex. You will also find a link to Cook Memorial Public Library's kid-friendly online databases for research and learning, as well as some fun podcasts for kids and online coding games. Take some time to explore our library website as a family!
Helping Your Child Select Good Fit Books
How can you help your child pick books that are just right for them? In our library we use the iPick Strategy to select good fit books, which includes the 5 finger test. A parent handout and visuals for the iPick strategy can be found below. During book checkout we encourage students to select at least one good fit book that they are able to read independently. We say, "Choose one that's not too easy, not too hard, but just right!" Their second library book can be a graphic novel, a shorter non-fiction book, a picture book they want to re-read just for fun, or a harder chapter book to read with a grown up or older sibling at home. Students are most inspired to read when they feel that they have autonomy in selecting what books to read for pleasure!
