Winter Park Band Notes
May 5, 2018
FROM MR. BLACKMER
Congratulations to all of our concert and jazz bands on a terrific spring concert this past Thursday evening! I know that it was a bit on the longer side for one of our concerts, but I really can't think of a better way to spend a few hours listening to some great performances from our (your) students. I would like to especially congratulate our two concerto winners - Adam DeLoach and Mitchell Thomas!
Thank you to all of our parent and student volunteers who helped out with Band Registration this past Tuesday evening! If you have not yet turned in your 2018/2019 Band Registration paperwork, please take care of that this coming week! All of the Band Registration information and paperwork can be found HERE.
I look forward to seeing everyone at our annual Band Banquet this coming Friday night at 6 PM! Please remember to sign-up HERE for a dish to pass - this is your admission to the potluck, and then sign-in to your Charms account and RSVP for everyone attending HERE.
Finally, congratulations to our new 2018/2019 Band President, Madeline Skena! Congrats also need to go to the other four candidates - Mauricio Dantas, Patrick DeLoach, Evan Jackson, and Maia Ruiz! I will be bringing back class representatives this next school year, so students can be thinking about who they would like to nominate for those positions!
All the Best!
Mr. Blackmer
BAND BANQUET
The Band Banquet begins at 6:00 PM in the West Cafeteria. Your ticket to the dinner is your dish serving 8-10. Students attending alone may team up with another student attending alone and bring a dish together. PLEASE USE A DISPOSABLE DISH AND BRING A SERVING UTENSIL MARKED CLEARLY WITH YOUR NAME. All students and families will be responsible for cleaning up their own dish before the awards ceremony begins. Bring a cooler in your car if you would like to take home leftovers.
The awards ceremony will begin at approximately 7:30 PM. You can RSVP and sign up for your dish on the Band calendar (May 11), or see the links above in Mr. Blackmer's comments.
BAND BANQUET HELP
We still need help for Band Banquet preparations next week. We are in special need of help on the afternoon of May 11, from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM in the West Cafeteria, and for clean up after the awards ceremony. Parents who have a flexible schedule please consider helping us. Senior students we would love your help in the cafeteria from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM! Sign up is on the band calendar on May 11 at Band Banquet Set Up/Clean up Help.
CONCERT ATTIRE RETURN - MAY 11
All students must have their concert tuxedo pants/jackets and dresses DRY-CLEANED and returned to the Band Room by Friday, May 11. Students who have not returned dry-cleaned uniforms by this day will be charged for its replacement. Garment racks will be available in the Band Room beginning on Monday to take returned garments.
Seniors must return their dry-cleaned uniform or pay the replacement fee to be able to access graduation tickets. All uniforms must be returned on a hanger, covered with the dry-cleaning plastic with receipt, and marked clearly with your FULL NAME. Uniforms will be reissued at the beginning of next year. If seniors own uniform accessories or marching shoes that you will no longer be using, please consider donating those items to the band.
If you have questions, or if you need an extension, please contact Mr. Blackmer directly.
CARPENTRY & PAINTING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Skilled Carpenter Needed
If you have carpentry skills and tools we need your help. We are making some modifications to our marching band trailer to accommodate the new aluminum stairs that will be delivered this spring.
Painters Needed
Due to a lack of enough volunteers, the Trailer painting day has been moved to May 19. Please look for an opportunity on Band Registration Night to sign up to help with this important need.
For both opportunities to serve, please contact Willson McBurney at WillsonMcBurney@gmail.com.
MAITLAND SHORES 4TH OF JULY BAND
Do you want to learn classic patriotic pieces and show tunes and keep up your chops during the summer at the same time? Then you will want to play in the 46th annual Maitland Shores 4th of July Fun Band. We perform at noon on the 4th of July on Lake Maitland then receive a free catered BBQ lunch for each member plus one guest. (Meal tickets for additional guests are for sale at the event.) Band members range in age from High School to much older, and many return year after year! It is a great way to give back to the community, keep in touch with friends, and eat a great meal. High school students can earn community service hours!
Our 3 rehearsals will be held in the office building at Maitland Community Park, 1400 Mayo Ave., off 17-92 near the overpass of Maitland Blvd, on Sundays, June 10, June 24, and July 1. They will start at 1:30 PM. There will be no rehearsal on Father’s Day, June 1!
Please contact Jane Claus if you are interested and/or if you have a friend that is interested. (Ask Jane first before inviting a friend, in case we are full in that section.) There is a limit to the number we can have in the band, so slots will be filled on a first come first serve basis to make sure all parts are covered. The music is challenging (Sousa, Fillmore, etc.), so we welcome those who can read well and have played at least 2 years in school.
AMAZON FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY!
Even though the holiday season is past us, this is still an excellent tool to raise money for the Band every time you shop at Amazon. The Winter Park High School Alumni Band Association is a registered charity on Smile.Amazon.com, so please remember to use this unique link to shop at Amazon every time, and a small percentage of the sale (at no cost to you) will automatically be sent quarterly to the WPHSABAA account and then donated to the Winter Park Band Program. If we all use this link every time, we can raise funds on an ongoing basis to help the band! https://smile.amazon.com/ch/27-0964817
If you have any questions, contact Jane Claus at janeclaus@live.com.
