"Educate and Empower Students for Future Success"
Our Path to First Choice No. 10 November 4, 2022
Here's Our Path note for this week. Thank you for all you do for our learners!

WASD Strategic Plan
"Without continual growth and progress, words such as improvement, achievement, and success have no meaning."--Benjamin Franklin.
Our Path Note Topic
This year and part of last year the Path Note has focused on the activities and projects moving WASD toward First Choice. Occasionally, there are some topics that focus on maintaining ourselves through the challenging winter, early spring and even the holidays. But, nevertheless, The Path Note's purpose is to communicate our progress toward First Choice.
Over the last several years we have developed projects, programs, activities, etc. in the various Pillars of First Choice. Those pillars consist of Academic, Career, and Whole Child. We have added Innovation as a pillar.
WASD has added programs and positions to address various areas under the Whole Child Pillar Inspire and Boost classes, social workers, and other supports. The Department of Student Services has been added to help with the whole child challenges. As we well know, if we don't help some students with the whole child area, it is difficult to address the academic and career areas.
The MTSS process has been evolving and strengthened to help improve the Academic and the Whole Child Pillars. Various classes and interventions have been put in place to support the academic pillar.
A great focus and awareness has been placed on the career pillar. Career fairs, greater opportunities in internships, job shadowing, and other career-focused activities have been established. Careers have to be embedded in everything we do from PK to 12 over time, but WASD has made progress with that pillar.
Finally, the Innovation Pillar is a binary pillar. It is the education environment of creativity and innovation we are trying to promote in the schools...in the classrooms.. The purpose is to do whatever is needed in order to help each learner achieve their goals. It is also a key pillar for students. One thing we know is that our kids from here into the future will need to prepare for is being more creative and innovative in their lives in order to solve and address life in the second half of the 21st Century, and, for some, into the beginning of the 22nd.
Stay tuned for more on First Choice progress. It is a journey, and not a destination.

Piece of the Puzzle
This Week's Piece of the Puzzle is Ruth Helman. Starting in 2016, Ruth began the Summer Food Service Program and it has expanded to four sites serving thousands of meals each year.
While it is a community service to provide the meals, that works also generates additional audits and complicance reviews by the PA Division of Food and Nutrition. Ruth's team obtained another successful audit for the 2022 summer program with no compliance issues. The audit reviewed nine separate subjects such as meal pattern requirements, cooking/production records, and procurement documentation.
This dedication toward WASD kids is why Ruth Helman is this week's Piece of the Puzzle.
Join us in congratulating Ruth Helman as this week's Piece of the Puzzle.
New Policies
Suggested revisions and new policies come from the PA School Board Association, board members, staff, administration, and others. The proposed policy goes to the Policy Committee for review. The Policy Committee will either approve the proposed policy to go to full board for review and adoption, or will deny or wait for a different time to revisit it.
Even though it will not be weekly, stay tuned for any new and/or recently adopted policies in this section.

Food Policy Update: White House National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition and Health
Of particular note: Modernize federal programs so enrolled individuals can more easily utilize benefits. Many federal programs were established decades ago. To bring federal nutrition assistance programs into the 21st century:
- USDA, through support from ARP funds, will expand online shopping in WIC.
- Online shopping is currently only being piloted in a small number of WIC state agencies.
- USDA will also propose to update regulations to make the SNAP online shopping program permanent and continue to add more online retailers and states to the existing program.
- Online shopping can expand access to healthy food and break down barriers for marginalized communities and older adults who may face discrimination or stigma, increased health risks, or have limited mobility or transportation.
- Additionally, SNAP participants are not currently able to use their benefits to purchase certain prepared foods, which limits choices for families shopping at SNAP-authorized retailers.
- And, as WIC comes up for renewal by Congress, the Administration supports addressing WIC eligibility limitations to avoid nutrition gaps during key stages of life.
