Advice from the Big Dawgs: Alumnni Bulldogs and Students Connect Online!
Thursday, Sep. 28
12-1:30 p.m.
Online: Register Here
Join fellow University of Georgia students and alumni for the fall Advice from the Big Dawgs virtual networking event!
Students will get the opportunity to connect with alumni professionals in industry areas who live around the world! Alumni can share experiences, exchange career tips and students can build a global professional network - all online!
It's free, it's only an hour, and it's fun!
How it Works: Online networking enables you to speed-network no matter where you are in the world. You can sign in from your home, office, library, phone or tablet. The chats are text-based and timed, allowing you to make connections, exchange contact information, and end the hour with several new connections you didn't have before. After the chats, add your new contacts to your network by adding them to your LinkedIn networks or following up via email.
Here are some ideas on how to get the conversation started with alumni:
- What did you study at UGA?
- What do you do professionally?
- Why did you decide to participate in this event?
- How did you get into your industry area?
- Can I ask for your advice on ____?
- What's your favorite memory on campus?
- If you could do one thing differently in your career, what would it be?
A transcript of your conversations will be saved for you to access after each event, so you can look back at your chat history, review your notes, gather contact information and follow up.
If you have any questions about this event, please email Bethany Mills at bjbagley@uga.edu.
Apply for The Pitch Event
We invite you to apply to compete in our new Career Center Event, The Pitch, offering you a chance to network and receive valuable career coaching from experienced professionals, as well as compete for the grand prize (to be announced soon)!
The Pitch will take place on Wednesday, October 11 from 5:30-8, with a networking reception to follow the competition.
This event is modeled after NBCs “The Voice,” in which 12 UGA student finalists will deliver their elevator pitch (one minute or less) to an audience, including our employer judges. The judges will spin around to face the contestant when they like what they hear. Each finalist will get to choose one judge to be their coach, and will receive 1 or 2 follow-up coaching sessions.
To apply, please visit the Career Center’s Big Interview webpage. Go to the Assignments tab, and enter the code: 75e585
The deadline to apply is 11:59 PM on Sunday, October 1. Please see below for application information:
*Big Interview is a new Career Center resource that allows you to study interview skills and practice your own responses using video recordings. UGA students have free access, but you will need to create an account using your UGA email address to get started.
Submissions should be a 45-60 second video recording of your pitch, which highlights your professional qualities, qualifications, and/or aspirations. We will accept audio-only submissions if you do not have video capabilities.
We encourage you to be creative and original, but you may explore Big Interview for advice on how to craft your pitch (also considered a response to the question, “Tell me about yourself”). We also provide tips in our Career Guide, and on our website. As always, you are also welcome to schedule an appointment and visit walk-in hours for help!
If you have any questions, please email Tom Fenner, Graduate Assistant for the Terry Team, at fennertw@uga.edu.
