SHINE Program in the Spotlight at National Conference

Three individuals from Moberly School District recently shared information on our district's new teacher induction program at the National Learning Forward Annual Conference in Nashville, TN.

Tara Link, Sara McDowell, and Ashley Patrick presented on the SHINE program, specifically how the district has implemented supporting, helping, and inspiring new educators. Their presentation, "You're a Gold Star Member," explored induction, orientation, and onboarding strategies for new hires in small districts.

Congrats to Tara, Sara, and Ashley for putting Moberly in the national education spotlight!

Educators interested in presenting at this conference in December can submit proposals beginning January 31. Learning Forward shows you how to plan, implement, and measure high-quality professional learning so you and your team can achieve success with your system, your school, and your students.

District offers LETRS Training

As part of the MO DESE literacy initiatives and efforts, our district is participating in training on LETRS® (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling), which supports evidence-based literacy instruction focused on the science of reading. Two Spartan teachers received the title of Trainer, so we can now offer on-campus sessions for our staff.

Ashley Patrick and Lorrie Egesdal meet with elementary teachers from North Park and South Park to review and revise instructional materials about how the brain works during reading and how to best teach young learners. The first two district cohorts have begun and are meeting monthly. If you are interested in this program, please email Parisa Stoddard.

Whether you prefer podcasts, online reading, or a book in hand, resources on the Science of Reading for staff members can be found here.

Bond Project Clarification

The bond project and new fieldhouse were discussed at the board meeting last week. It was brought to the district’s attention that some staff and patrons may have viewed the board discussion as the district not having enough funds to cover the bond projects; however, all board-approved bond projects to date are, in fact, fully funded. For clarification, the bond language specified a no-tax increase for the purpose of constructing an addition at ECLC and a new alternative school building (see complete ballot wording below). Both projects are currently under construction, so the focus of discussion now is on the remaining $6 million.

It is, and has been, known that the district would have to be flexible in allocating the leftover funds given that the amount would not be sufficient to complete the construction of a fieldhouse with the size and scope desired. The current plan is that the remaining bond project funds will be used, at the district’s discretion, to supplement the MHS fieldhouse project.

At this time, the district continues to look for fiscally responsible ways to complete a new fieldhouse and utilize taxpayer dollars from the remaining bond funds. Updates will continue to be provided in The Spartan Scoop and the Board Highlights.
