Message From the Principal
Rabbi Jonathan Sacks shares a beautiful D’var Torah related to Chanukah. He discusses the argument in the Talmud between Rav and Shmuel that centers on the question of whether or not one is permitted to use one Chanukah light to kindle another (other than the Shamash). According to Rav, this is not allowed, but Shmuel’s opinion is that it is permitted. Typically, when Rav and Shmuel disagree, we abide by the opinion of Rav. However, there are three exceptions to this general principle and this is one of those three. Rabbi Sacks explains that Rav says “no” because you do not do anything that will diminish the light of the first. Shmuel says “yes” because when it comes to spiritual goods as opposed to material goods, the more I share, the more I have.
When our students went to Saunder’s House, a home for the elderly, last week they shared their knowledge, their joy, their messages, and their pride for the celebration, story, and miracle of Chanukah. The incredible things that they shared were a wonderful gift to the residents who truly enjoyed our visit. It was our students, however, that left with more than what they had when they arrived. Every joyful smile, song, message, and performance that was shared was given back to our students. Students went in wanting to share and perform, and they all left feeling an extraordinary sense of accomplishment and impact.
Those extraordinary gains are what we constantly strive for in our school. One of our learning principles is “intrinsic rewards lead to long-term growth.” Our teachers at KYLS create learning experiences designed to emphasize the positive feelings which emerge from interpersonal and spiritual connection. When students learn this way, the rewards they feel are deep and longlasting, not superficial and short-lived. Those gains perhaps take more effort to create, but when they are ultimately achieved, they have a far stronger and powerful effect on our students’ long term growth.
