21 Sports ... 1 Team ... WE ARE HOBART!
The HOME STRETCH for athletics will be FAST & FURIOUS ( ... without Vin Diesel). The month of April is here and spring sports have shifted gears and are moving FULL SPEED AHEAD ( ... thought I'd stick with the car references). In fact, while seemingly EVERYONE was off vacationing, spring sports were getting some WORK WORK WORK done right here in H-town as both Baseball and Softball opened their seasons on the diamond!!
Fasten your seat belts ... it's time for BricksCenter!
Baseball
On Monday, the Brickies opened their 2019 campaign at home against the Merrillville Pirates ... and they SHINED BRIGHT on the DIAMOND in an 11-5 win! The Pirates jumped out early and led 5-4 after just 2 innings, but a pitching change by Hobart keyed a comeback that saw the Brickies score 7 unanswered runs to close out the game!
Leading hitters for Hobart were junior Matthew Benton (2 for 2 with 2 doubles, 2 runs and 2 RBIs), junior Tyler Schultz (2 for 4 with a run scored and 3 RBIs), junior Brandon Marciniak (2 for 3 with 2 runs scored), junior Benny Guevara (2 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI), senior Ryan Earp (2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBIs), and sophomore Jaden Deel (2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs).
On the mound, Schultz got the win by only giving up 1 hit and striking out 11 in 5 innings of WORK WORK WORK!
Tuesday over at Washington Township, the Brickie bats were still alive and well, but Hobart couldn't find any rhythm on the mound ... which added up to a tough loss against one of the better small-school programs in NW Indiana. Hobart led 7-2 after scoring 3 runs in the top half of the 4th inning, but the host Senators reeled off 13 runs over the next 2 innings and won 15-8.
Junior Matthew Benton again led the Brickies at the plate going 2 for 2 with a double, 2 walks and 3 runs scored.
Ranked #4 in the area going into the weekend, Hobart traveled to Louisville for a few games against some of the best in the Midwest! The Brickies got 2 of the 3 scheduled games in thanks to some wet weather (big surprise), but the experience was FANTASTIC! Despite losing both contests, at full strength - this group matched up VERY WELL against some top shelf competition ... and sophomore Jaden Deel hit the 1st EVER home run on a new field that opened just prior to the 3-day event!!
Hobart even got to take in some NCAA Div 1 baseball between Kentucky and Georgia on Thursday night!!
LET'S GO BOYS!

Softball
The first 3 innings were INTENSE with Chesterton scoring 1 run in both the second & third innings and the Lady Brickies getting on the board in the bottom half of the third to cut the Trojan lead to 2-1! Unfortunately, the wheels came off for Hobart in the 4th as we committed 4 consecutive errors and Chesterton capitalized with 8 runs to blow open a close game. The Lady Trojans left the friendly city with a 16-1 victory ... clearly their #3 ranking is legit.
The final score wasn't what we were hoping for against one of NWI's best, but definitely some positives to build on from those 1st 3 innings for our 1st contest of the spring ... a learning experience no doubt for a VERY young team looking to gain experience and compete.
The Lady Brickies had the weekend off so they headed south to Indiana University to watch the Hoosiers take on Michigan State in softball and hopefully get a tour of the beautiful facilities down there ... perfect way to wrap up spring break!
