Veterans Day Guest Speaker: US Congressman Filemon Vela
Congressman Filemon Vela represents the 34th Congressional Distict of Texas. District 34 is anchored in Cameron County in the “tip of Texas” and runs 300 miles north to Gonzales County. Crucial to District 34 is our agricultural procedures, land and sea ports linking the Rio Grande Valley rapidly expanding energy production facilities to consumers throughout the USA and Mexico.
Congressman Vela was born in Harlingen but was raised in Brownsville. Congressman Vela's roots run deep in South Texas. His ancestors purchased land from the McAllen family to establish the Laguna Seca Ranch where the first citrus orchard in Hidalgo County was planted. President Jimmy Carter appointed his father Filemon Vela, Sr as one of the first Hispanic federal judges, where he presided over the Southern District of Texas. Congressman Vela mother (Blanca Sanchez Vela) served as the first and only female Mayor of Brownsville.
Congressman Vela graduated from Saint Joseph Academy and later graduated from Georgetown University and the University of Texas School of Law. His interest in public service grew from his legal practice for his clients seeking justice in state and federal courts as an attorney for more than 20 years. He was first elected to Congress in 2012 and will be serving his fourth term this coming session. Congressman Vela seats on the Committee on Homeland Security, Border and Maritime Security subcommittee, co-chair of the Congressional Border Caucus and Agricultural committee. He is a strong advocate for immigration rights, educational programs—including Head Start, public education and Pell Grants. Congressman Vela is married to Rose Vela and they reside in Brownsville, Texas.
